Tso Vilakazi, a legendary figure in Orlando Pirates history, has expressed concerns about one of the club’s new signings, suggesting that the player would have been better suited to join Kaizer Chiefs instead.
In preparation for the 2024/25 season, the Buccaneers have made several signings aimed at enhancing their squad. The most recent addition is Deano Van Rooyen, who was brought in from Stellenbosch FC.
Pirates successfully secured his signature, outmaneuvering their traditional rivals, Chiefs, who had shown interest in the player for some time.
Vilakazi has raised concerns about the 27-year-old's signing, arguing that Ezimnyama Ngenkani already possesses sufficient talent in the right-back position with players like Thabiso Monyane and Thabiso Lebitso.
Furthermore, he believes that it may prove challenging for the new player to integrate into the team, given that the other members have already completed their pre-season preparations.
VILAKAZI – ‘THESE ARE THE CONCERNS I HAVE ABOUT THIS SIGNING’
“I genuinely believe that Deano Van Rooyen should have signed for a club like Kaizer Chiefs instead of Orlando Pirates. Let me explain,” said Vilakazi in an interview with iDiski Times.
“Pirates have Thabiso Monyane and Thabiso Lebitso at right-back. Monyane is our youth product and he is learning his game. Lebitso came from Chippa United and has grown immensely.
“Pirates already have enough players in this position. Whereas, Chiefs would be able to use Deano immediately.
“Now what are you going to do with Monyane? Are you going to loan him? What will happen to all the experience he was gaining? Who do you bench between Van Rooyen and Lebitso?
“These are the concerns I have about this signing.
“Deano is obviously a good player. Very experienced. His quality is there for all to see, but I’m concerned about the many options in a single position.
“In addition, I have to say this; South African clubs are extremely poor with their planning.
“Why do you sign a player when pre-season is over? When is the player supposed to adjust? Many of our clubs have poor planning!”
