The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has ushered in a new era for women’s football with a landmark announcement regarding the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON)

This year’s tournament, scheduled to run from July 5-26 in Morocco, will feature an extraordinary 100% increase in prize money for the eventual winner.

HOW MUCH THE WINNER WILL TAKE HOME

This translates to a massive USD 1 million (roughly R18 million) payout, which is double the amount secured by Banyana Banyana when they last clinched the coveted title.

The ripple effect of this boost is seen across the board, with the total prize money for the entire competition jumping by 45% to an impressive USD 3,475,000.

This significant financial uplift extends to all top-performing teams, reflecting a broader commitment from CAF. The runners-up will now receive USD 500,000 (approximately R9 million), a substantial reward for reaching the final.

Teams finishing in third place will be awarded USD 350,000 (over R6 million), while even the fourth-placed side will benefit handsomely, taking home USD 300,000 (over R5 million).

These figures underline CAF’s determination to make women’s football more attractive and financially viable for all participants.

Crucially, CAF emphasized that the 100% increase in the winning bonus is specifically aimed at directly improving the remuneration of players, coaches, and technical staff.

This strategic move is intended to foster greater professionalism and provide better incentives within women’s football structures across the continent.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe articulated the organization’s vision, stating that these financial efforts are a clear demonstration of their “continued commitment to the development and progression of women’s football.”

The heightened prize money is expected to not only boost morale but also attract more investment and talent, setting a new benchmark for women’s football in Africa.
