Jabu Mahlangu – What Nabi should focus on in the Soweto derby

Published on by

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Jabu Mahlangu has discussed what the club’s head coach Nasreddine Nabi should focus on in the Soweto derby.

The highly anticipated between the two sides will then take place on Saturday, May 3rd, at the iconic 2010 FIFA World Cup venue, FNB Stadium in Soweto.

Chiefs will be fighting to retain hopes for the top eight spot as they are ninth in the league standings with 30 points from 25 matches.

On the other hand, the Buccaneers are aiming for strong contention to keep their Betway Premiership title aspirations alive.

They are currently second in the league standings with 46 points from 20 games, trailing log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by nine points, having played two fewer matches.

Mahlangu suggests that given the team's recent struggles, Nabi's priority should be to prepare the players mentally for the upcoming derby clash.

MAHLANGU SAYS NABI SHOULD PREPARE THE PLAYERS MENTALLY AHEAD OF SOWETO DERBY

“In the remaining games, they will go into them lacking confidence first,” Mahlangu said on SABC Sport as quoted by KickOff.

“Sekhukhune is doing well, which means they have more confidence than Chiefs. Orlando Pirates have also been doing well, which means they will also have more confidence (on Saturday).

“So, Chiefs are already on the back foot. So, I think at Chiefs right now, as a coach, what are you going to coach? I think now Nabi should just focus on the players' mindset.

“Because, as far as coaching goes, you spoke about this the whole season, it did not happen. So now, it's important for them to get points to get into the Top Eight.

“So I think the coaches now have to focus mostly on the psyche of the players, more than the coaching itself.”
