Top 5 things look forward to in the Soweto derby

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are set to clash in the second Soweto derby of the Betway Premiership season on May 3rd at FNB Stadium, with crucial three points on the line for both sides.

Afrik-Foot takes a look at five interesting aspects ahead of this encounter.

CHIEFS BATTLING FOR TOP EIGHT SPOT

Despite falling out of the top eight after their loss to Marumo Gallants last weekend, Amakhosi haven't given up hope of securing a spot.

Currently ninth in the league standings with 30 points from 25 matches, securing maximum points in their remaining fixtures is crucial to keep their top-eight aspirations alive with six points still to play for before the 2024/25 season concludes.

PIRATES AIMING TO CONTINUE TITLE CONTENTION

On the other hand, Ezimnyama Ngenkani are aiming to keep their Betway Premiership title hopes alive with a strong contention.

The Buccaneers are currently in second place with 46 points from their 20 matches played, finding themselves two games behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have accumulated 55 points.

CLASH TO DETERMINE FAVOURITES FOR NEDBANK CUP FINAL

Although they say that form counts for little in a Soweto Derby, the outcome of this encounter could be a key indicator of who might be the favorite for the upcoming Nedbank Cup final on May 10.

The Buccaneers have impressed this season with their strong challenge in various competitions, a contrast to Amakhosi's inconsistent performances under coach Nasreddine Nabi.

PIRATES TO EXPLOIT CHIEFS’ DEFENCE?

With key players like the injured Rushwin Dortley, Inacio Miguel, and Given Msimango missing, the Chiefs defense has appeared leaky in recent matches.

This defensive vulnerability could be exploited by the Sea Robbers' sharp offensive players, including Relebohile Mofokeng, Mohau Nkota, and Patrick Maswanganyi.

SIRINO & MMODI’S RETURN BOOST FOR CHIEFS

Gaston Sirino and Pule Mmodi were absent from the match against Marumo Gallants where Chiefs lost 2-1 at home in the league.

Their return will provide Nasreddine Nabi with more attacking options as they aim to cause an upset against favorites Pirates.
