Kaizer Chiefs begin pre-season with new face spotted at Naturena

Kaizer Chiefs are back in training for the new season and among the players who returned to Naturena is a new face who will be hoping to play a key role next season.

Chiefs have wasted little time to begin training for the new campaign with coach Nasreddine Nabi hoping that early preparations will see a change in fortunes in 2025-26 after their ninth-place finish last season.

The Glamour Boys endured yet another torrid campaign although winning the Nedbank Cup provided the silver lining to what was a tough season while earning them a place in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Who was the new player at Chiefs’ training?

Kabelo Nkgwesa of Kaizer Chiefs.

That has seen coach Nasreddine Nabi scan the market for quality players to reinforce his squad but it seems he will be looking for in-house solutions in some areas going by what was witnessed on the first day of training.

Left-back Kabelo Nkgwesa was among the players spotted at Naturena on Friday as he joined the rest for their pre-season which points to a possible promotion to the senior team for the highly-rated defender.

Nkgwesa was a key player for the Chiefs Diski Challenge team that won a maiden DDC title last season and was named the most Improved Player as well as the Player of the Season at the club’s awards for their PSL reserve team.

It is yet to be made official whether Nkgwesa will be promoted but the departure of Edmilson Dove could open up space for him in the team.

Chiefs already have a young left-back in Bradley Cross, who joined the team last August from Golden Arrows, but Nabi is believed to be keen to further bolster the position although the reported signing of Thabiso Monyane could also be the answer.

It remains to be seen which role Nkgwesa will be afforded in the team with Chiefs’ pre-season trip to the Netherlands next month likely to reveal his true role.
