After Nedbank Cup triumph, Amakhosi star targets Africa! ‘We want to win it’

Kaizer Chiefs, finally, won their first trophy in a decade last weekend when they beat Orlando Pirates 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup final.

The Glamour Boys are now guaranteed a place in the Caf Confederation Cup next season. The Soweto giants will be aiming to have a good outing in the continental club competition like Stellenbosch, Orlando Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns have done in their respective tournaments.

Stellies reached the Caf Confederation Cup semi-final but were undone by Tanzanian heavyweights Simba SC. The Buccaneers fell in the Caf Champions League semi-final at the hands of Pyramids, but Masandawana eliminated holders Al Ahly to reach the last hurdle.

Amakhosi defender Dillan Solomons believes winning the Nedbank Cup might be what they needed to get back to the top of not only South African football, but the continent at large.

Caf Confederation Cup will help us put our brand out there

“[Winning Nedbank Cup] is huge. It is big for us as a team. It means we will play in Africa, which has been a goal since the start of the season. Obviously, it is not the Champions League, but it is something we get to put our brand out there again, and hopefully we can get into the final and win that one too,” he opened up to the media.

“We wanted it a little bit sooner and this is a good moment for us. It has been a long time since we put smiles on our supporters' faces and we just have to be happy about it. Our chairman [Kaizer Motaung] has put a lot of trust in us as players and in the technical team, which means a lot to us, and what more can we do to say thank you to the chairman than winning trophies? Hopefully, this is the start of something new for us.

“It feels good and exciting. I think our character pulled us through and a hunger to win this trophy and put a smile on our fans. The drought for 10 years was on us, I think we wanted it more than Pirates,” Solomons concluded.

On Saturday, Amakhosi will play Sekhukhune United in the Premier Soccer league outing before ending their season at home against Polokwane City.
