Kaizer Chiefs were brought crushing back to earth by Sekhukhune United who handed them their first defeat in the PSL this season, following a 3-1 triumph on Tuesday.
Chiefs had made a strong start to the season, winning four and drawing their opening five games, and were the only side yet to concede in the league before taking on Babina Noko.
However, Eric Tinkler’s men run rings around them at the FNB Stadium and were 3-1 up even before the 60th minute.
Sekhukhune made a great start, scoring the opening goal after just four minutes, when Bradley Grobler netted his 100th PSL game of the season after being teed up by Tsepo Matsimbi.
The full-back won the ball in the air after getting the better of Paseka Mako and Aden McCarthy to set up the former SuperSport United striker who made no mistakes from close range.
Flavio equalises after great work from Lilepo
Sekhukhune’s lead lasted eight minutes before Chefs equalised after some good work from Glody Lilepo.
Lilepo made a good run on the right wing and brought in a great ball which Sekhukhune goalkeeper Toaster Nsabatamakes made a mess of as he failed to clear and it fell to Flavio Silva in the box.
The newly-signed striker showed a poacher’s instinct to direct the ball into the net for 1-1 for his second goal in as many games.
His knee seemed to have left Nsabata in a spot of bother as the goalkeeper needed lengthy treatment on the pitch before he resumed.
In the 31st minute, Lilepo stung Nsabata’s palms with a ferocious shot from just outside the box as Chiefs looked for the second goal but the first half ended 1-1.
How did Sekhukhune finish off Chiefs?
After the break, it took Sekhukhune four minutes to score the second as Grobler sealed his brace for the night.
After Chiefs made a mess of a clearance in the box, the ball fell to Grobler and tucked in a forest of legs, the striker hammered home on the half turn for 2-1 in favour of the visitors.
The third goal arrived soon after with Grobler turning provider this time as he flicked the ball beautifully with his head in behind the Chiefs defence for an onrushing Thabang Monare and the former Orlando Pirates midfielder hammered past Brandon Petersen for 3-1 after 56 minutes.
It was the first defeat for Chiefs this season and also saw their clean sheet run ended as Babina Noko moved back to the top of the table with 16 points, two ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns and three better than Amakhosi from six games.
It was the 899th PSL fixture for Chiefs but the landmark match did not end as they had hoped.
