Kaizer Chiefs’ woes deepen with CAF CC defeat against Red Arrows

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs fell by a solitary goal in the first leg of the second preliminary CAF Confederation Cup outing against Red Arrows at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, Lusaka on Saturday.

The Glamour Boys came into the game without some of their influential players, including captain Brandon Petersen, owing to injuries. Coach Fernando Da Cruz stuck with his defensive approach hoping to deliver away.

Goalless first half

In domestic competitions, the Glamour Boys have been in good form in front of the goal. This season, they have scored in seven of the nine games played across all competitions.

The only time they had failed to score was in the 0-1 loss to Golden Arrows in the quarter-final of the MTN8, and in the goalless draw with the same opponent in the Premier Soccer League outing.

This explains why their supporters must have anticipated at least a goal in the first half against their opponents, but it ended without either team scoring. Nevertheless, the Glamour Boys were forced to replace Thabiso Monyane with Thulani Mabaso after the former sustained an injury.

Chiefs go down!

In their bid to get a goal, the Glamour Boys brought in Flavio Silva, Etiosa Ighodaro and Wandile Duba in the second half replacing Luke Baartman, Shabalala and Mfundo Vilakazi.

But it was the Zambian outfit who found the back of the net in the 76th minute as Alassane Diarra rse highest to head home a corner.

The Glamour Boys now have a daunting task to get needed result in Durban on Friday to make the group stage of the annual competition.
