Kaizer Chiefs fans: Benni McCarthy can only replace Nabi under one condition

Published on by

Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy is among the names that have been linked to the Kaizer Chiefs job but the club’s supporters have issued an ultimatum over his possible hiring.

McCarthy, currently coach of the Kenya national team, has been touted as a possible replacement for coach Nasreddine Nabi at Chiefs with other names being Pitso Mosimane and Jose Riveiro among others.

While Chiefs fans have no problem with South Africa’s all-time top scorer taking over from Nabi, they are not comfortable with one of his lieutenants who they have branded an ‘enemy’ of Amakhosi.

Orlando Pirates legend Moeneeb Josephs is the man Chiefs fans have made it clear that should not follow McCarthy to Naturena were he to be handed the job as they are not comfortable with his Bucs links as well as how he has been criticising their team.

Josephs, a former Pirates goalkeeper, never missed a chance to take aim at Chiefs and his constant jibes have not gone down well with their supporters.

“The idea of Benni McCarthy arriving at Kaizer Chiefs with Moeneeb Joseph as his goalkeeper coach is something that would make me go to Lena Road and stage a one-man protest outside the gates,” a Chiefs fan posted on X, making it clear of what he thinks of Josephs potentially working at his club.

His sentiments were echoed by several other Chiefs fans, who like McCarthy but would not want Josephs, who works as the goalkeeper trainer in Kenya and had the same role when his friend was head coach of AmaZulu FC.

“Yhooo Moeneeb after all the disrespect that he has been spreading about our team, will also join u on that solo protest, no ways,” another Chiefs fan said.

“Imagine Moneeb as our goalkeeper coach after all he's been saying about our team.”

“I also don't like the idea, especially Moeneeb Joseph. He never likes us,” wrote another Chiefs supporter.

Chiefs have been under assistant coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze since Nabi was confirmed to have left but they had not fared well so far, losing 1-0 to Angolan side Kabuscorp in the CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round last Saturday, before a 1-1 draw with Marumo Gallants on Wednesday.
