Silva, Lilepo light up FNB as Kaizer Chiefs firm up CAF spot

Kaizer Chiefs secured a fourth straight PSL win to maintain their stranglehold of third place on the table in a game that was halted for over 20 minutes due to light issues on Sunday.

Chiefs won 2-0 against TSG Galaxy at the FNB Stadium with goals from Flavio Silva and Glody Lilepo either side of the two halves settling the contest.

Amakhosi were full value for their money as they dominated the contest with Silva scoring the opening goal in the 34th minute when he headed home from a brilliant cross from Mduduzi Shabalala.

The youngster did some good work to shrug off two of his markers before floating a good ball in the box and Silva rose highest to slot home from a free header.

Lights failure halt proceedings

Chiefs would continue their good show in the second half and they should have scored the second goal just before the 60-minute mark when Aden McCarthy rose highest and headed brilliantly from Shabalala’s freekick but Galaxy goalkeeper Eliezer Ira Tape dived low to keep it out.

However, soon after, there was a stoppage that saw both sets of players head to the dressing room with match commissioner Bongani Mpinda later clarifying that the situation had arisen due to low visibility as a result of inclement weather.

Floodlights at the FNB Stadium were not able to light up the stadium as the rains came down and there was a need to temporarily halt the game to sort out the issue.

However, after a stoppage of over 20 minutes, the game, which had been halted at the 64th minute, resumed and Chiefs tightened the screws.

Lilepo produces magic for Kaizer Chiefs

In the 74th minute, Lilepo, who has offered Chiefs some clutch moments this season, produced another moment of magic.

The Glamour Boys quickly turned defence into attack as Sibongiseni Mthethwa’s pass from deep put Lilepo on his bike, the Congolese winger isolating his marker with a drop of the shoulder and in the Galaxy goal, Tape panicked and got away off his line.

Lilepo opted to calmly shoot from range and watched as the ball sailed into an empty net, adding onto Galaxy’s woes.

Chiefs, who had not beaten the Rockets in 10 previous attempts, ended that hoodoo and most importantly, added three more points on the board, their fourth straight win and a clean sheet for the returning goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, which takes their tally to 42 points from 22 matches.

Amakhosi remain in third position, three points more than fourth-placed AmaZulu, who have played two games more, giving Chiefs hope of sealing the CAF Confederation Cup slot.
