Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has delivered a comprehensive update on the club’s growing injury list ahead of their crucial CAF Confederation Cup group-stage showdown against Zesco United on Sunday. The Soweto giants host the Zambian outfit at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in a match that could significantly shape Group D.
Chiefs head into the fixture buoyed by a gritty 1–0 win over Marumo Gallants in Bloemfontein earlier in the week, secured by a stunning strike from Glody Lilepo. The victory strengthened their campaign as they look to tighten their grip on the group standings.
Amakhosi currently sit third in Group D but remain firmly in contention for a knockout spot, having already beaten Zesco 1–0 away in Ndola courtesy of a Pule Mmodi goal. Another win at home would be a major step toward qualification.
However, Kaze confirmed that the squad has been stretched thin, with multiple key players unavailable through injury.
Who Are the Six Players Ruled Out?
“We’ve had some setbacks,” Kaze said in press conference.
“George Matlou returned to full training yesterday, but he hasn’t been part of the squad for four weeks, so he’s ruled out. Thabo Cele is still out, Bradley Cross is out, and Ox [Sibongiseni Mthethwa] is out. Reeve Frosler has undergone surgery and will be out for some time. Fiacre Ntwari is not back yet, though he’ll resume training within a week since he has started walking on the side.”
Kaze also offered an update on Rushwin Dortley, whose long-term injury had complications late last year.
“Dortley’s condition has improved a lot. The issues he had around November have been corrected. We hope that in the next two weeks, he will undergo tests to see if he can start training. We’re optimistic he’ll pass.”
Positive News for Amakhosi Fans
Despite the lengthening casualty list, two important players are set to bolster the matchday squad.
“We’re happy Gaston Sirino is back, and Lilepo is back. Their experience will add more quality,” Kaze said.
What’s Next for Chiefs?
After their CAF duties, Chiefs turn their attention to the Nedbank Cup, where they travel to Cape Town to face Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday. They then return to continental action on Sunday when they host Al Masry in Polokwane.
