Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly decided to retain midfielder Njabulo Blom whose loan deal will end in June 2025.
Blom is on a season-long loan at Chiefs from MLS side St Louis City FC but the Glamour Boys have an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the campaign.
Having been so far impressed by his performances, Amakhosi are believed to have decided to retain their academy graduate, who is on a second spell at the club, after leaving at the start of 2023 for the MLS.
According to Soccer Laduma, the 25-year-old midfielder is also happy to stay at his boyhood club as he has no desire to return to the United States which has made a decision for Chiefs easier.
Chiefs believe midfielder is a ‘big asset’
“You know in a loan deal, there is either an obligation to buy at the end of the season or the option to buy. So, Chiefs have the option to buy when the loan deal expires at the end of the season and that is what they are taking up,” a source told Soccer Laduma.
“They feel that a fully fit Blom is an asset to the club and the technical team is happy with what they have seen so far. The management is now working on that buyout clause from St Louis City.
“So, it will be first agreeing on the buying then Chiefs will offer him their new contract. But they are already working on buying for now.”
Are Chiefs right to retain Njabulo Blom?
Blom was first promoted to the Chiefs senior team in 2019, starring for the club, before St Louis came calling in December 2022 after which the player left in January 2023.
He had a great start at the club under South African coach Bradley Carnell before losing his spot in the 2024 season, later falling out with the technical staff, and the club decided to offload him in September.
The defensive midfielder has so far made nine appearances for Chiefs this season while he has also slotted in at full-back when called upon by coach Nasreddine Nabi due to injuries or suspensions.
