Kaizer Chiefs slammed over co-coaching arrangement – ‘Whose philosophy is working?

Published on by

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Lifa Gqosha has made it clear that the Soweto giants made a mistake to appoint two coaches to lead the team.

Chiefs opted for a co-coaching arrangement when coach Nasreddine Nabi left the club last September as they promoted his assistants Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef to head the technical team until the end of the season.

The two coaches have had mixed fortunes and they now find themselves out of all cup competitions with the PSL the only one left for Amakhosi to contest.

Kaze and Ben Youssef have overseen 21 matches, winning nine, but there have been costly losses against Stellenbosch twice, which knocked them out of the Carling Knockout and Nedbank Cup, and to Zamalek, eliminating them from the CAF Confederation Cup last weekend.

Why Chiefs’ co-coaching arrangement was wrong

Gqosha feels Chiefs inconsistent run of results is down to the coaching arrangement which he feels gives players different sets of instructions as the two coaches might not always agree.

“Judging by their performance before, it seemed a good decision based on the results,” Gqosha told Sowetan Live.

“I think now the mistake is that there’s no one accountable between the two. So, it becomes a problem because one will blame the other, and both are coming with different philosophies. Whose philosophy is working during the match?

“They should have just given full responsibility to one, so he can account for it. If you put two people and say they are co-coaches and you give the two of them accountability, there are situations where they will differ.

Can Kaze and Ben Youssef shut their critics?

“They are human beings. I think the management should have been bold and made a decision. For me, it was a wrong decision,” he added.

Kaze and Ben Youssef have been widely criticised since their appointment with their detractors claiming they lack the experience and CV to lead such a huge club.

The coaching duo have also not covered themselves in glory, giving their critics enough ammunition, and they now have just one chance to shut them up which is winning the PSL title.
