With the 2026/27 season on the horizon, Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly looking to bolster their attacking midfield options, especially as Gaston Sirino appears set for an exit.
While Mduduzi Shabalala is the established first-choice playmaker, the club is eager to ease the creative load on the young star. Ethan Chislett seems not trusted by the technical staff, Luke Baartman is still adapting to the senior team while Mfundo Vilakazi has seen limited action in the number 10 role.
That brings into focus former Mamelodi Sundowns star Neo Maema, currently on loan at Tanzanian side Simba SC.

The Soweto giants had previously tried to sign Maema in late 2025 and are believed to have kept a close watch on his progress since.
Could Maema be the solution for Kaizer Chiefs?
Amakhosi’s pursuit of Maema is not new. The Glamour Boys first showed interest when the midfielder was struggling for consistent minutes at Mamelodi Sundowns. Maema later confirmed that his agent had informed him of the approach from Naturena.
However, he ultimately decided against the move, opting for a fresh start outside South Africa to secure more regular playing time. This led him to Simba SC, where he gained valuable experience in continental competition, contributing three combined goals and assists and earning a Man of the Match award.

A personal connection also links Maema to the club, as his father is a devoted Amakhosi supporter, adding a sentimental layer to a potential transfer.
Why ex-Sundowns star ticks most boxes
Regarded as one of South Africa’s most technically proficient attacking midfielders, Maema is known for his sharp dribbling, intelligent off-the-ball movement, exceptional vision, and a potent left foot.

Hailing from Bloemfontein, he developed at the Bloemfontein Celtic academy before making his senior debut in 2018. He quickly became a key creative force for Phunya Sele Sele, making over 50 appearances and playing a crucial role in their run to the 2020 Nedbank Cup final.
For Kaizer Chiefs, Maema would bring a different dimension. He offers extensive PSL experience, proven quality, and the creative spark needed to break down resilient defences.
With Sirino’s likely departure and Shabalala shouldering the creative burden, signing a seasoned professional like Maema could provide an immediate boost. His arrival would also allow the club’s younger talents to develop without being under excessive pressure to perform week in, week out.
