Kaizer Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung was the recipient of a R2 million gift from the PSL on Wednesday.
At the National Soccer League (NSL) Quadrennial General Meeting and Executive Committee election held in Johannesburg on Wednesday, PSL chairman Irvin Khoza, who retained his seat, said they had decided to hand Motaung the gift to spoil himself after turning 80 last month.
Motaung celebrated his 80th birthday on October 16 and having been a founding member of the NSL as well as Kaizer Chiefs, the country’s most popular club, the PSL top brass so it fit to reward him for his contribution to South African football.
Why was ‘Chincha Guluva' given R2 million?
“With the permission of the Executive Committee, we would like to grant Dr Motaung with R2 million to spoil himself,” said Khoza.
Born on October 16, 1944 in the township of Orlando in Soweto, Chincha Guluva, as he is popularly known, started his football journey in the streets of Phefeni before his talents were noticed as a school teenager, and he would soon join Orlando Pirates as a 16-year-old.
He later joined paid ranks abroad, moving to the United States, where he turned out for Atlanta Chiefs and it was while there that he had a vision to change the face of South African football.
Motaung founded Kaizer Chiefs over 50 years ago
Upon his return in 1969, he decided to start a club that would identify and harness local talents and on January 7, 1970, Kaizer Chiefs was born.
Under his guidance, the Glamour Boys have become the darling of South Africa and Africa, winning 13 league titles, the most in the country, and over 42 cups.
However, in the last decade, Motaung has watched as his club have limped on, failing to win a trophy since their last PSL title in 2015, and they brought in veteran Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi ahead of this season to try and revive their fortunes.
