Kamogelo Sebelebele’s stunning strike hands Orlando Pirates first PSL win of the season

Orlando Pirates recorded their first league win when they beat Stellenbosch FC 1-0 at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday thanks to Kamogelo Sebelebele’s stunning strike.

Pirates came into the match under pressure after starting the season with back-to-back defeats and a three-match winless run in all competitions.

It was Stellenbosch who had the first chance when Devin Titus got into space after 13 minutes and received a good ball but fired over the bar on the volley.

However, two minutes later, Pirates went ahead in stunning fashion. Sebelebele received the ball on the edge of the box and fired a first-time shot that flew past Sage Stephens in the Stellenbosch goal.

Just moments later, Pirates suffered a setback when defender Deano van Rooyen was stretchered off and it later emerged that the former Stellenbosch star had suffered an abductor muscle injury.

Sipho Mbule replaced him with Sibelebele moving to right-back and the former TS Galaxy man was a menace in defence just as he was in attack.

After the break, Pirates had chances to extend their lead with Deon Hotto missing from the near post while Relebohile Mofokeng made a driving run forward before firing low but just wide.

Hotto then had a glorious chance to wrap it up for Pirates when he was put through on goal but he took a shot early and saw it go wide, while substitute Andre de Jong had Stellies’ best chance of the second half when he stung Sipho Chaine’s hands as he drew a good save from the Pirates goalkeeper.

Victory sees Pirates record their first win of the season in the league which puts them on three points, four adrift of Mamelodi Sundowns and six behind Kaizer Chiefs.
