Orlando Pirates etched their name deeper into South African football history with a commanding 3-0 extra-time victory over Stellenbosch FC in the 2025 MTN8 Final at Mbombela Stadium. The win not only secured their 14th MTN8 title but also made them the first team to win the competition four times in a row.

Dominance in the MTN8

Pirates’ triumph continues a golden era in knockout football but still find themselves behind Kaizer Chiefs. Since the MTN8 was rebranded in 2008-09, the Buccaneers have lifted the trophy seven times, extending their record to eight MTN8 titles in the PSL era. Their overall tally of 14 titles (1972, 1974, 1978, 1983, 1993, 1996, 2000-01, 2010-11, 2011-12, 2020-21, 2022-23, 2023-24, 2024-25, 2025-26) is second only to Kaizer Chiefs (15).

This was Pirates’ fifth MTN8 title in the last six seasons, with only the 2021-22 campaign breaking their streak. They’ve now won six of their last seven cup finals, including back-to-back Nedbank Cup titles in 2022-23 and 2023-24.

Head-to-Head: Pirates vs Stellenbosch

This final marked the 18th meeting between Pirates and Stellenbosch across all competitions. Pirates claimed their eighth win (D5 L7), and their third MTN8 victory over Stellies in four tournament encounters (L1).

Stellenbosch, meanwhile, suffered their second consecutive MTN8 Final defeat, both at the hands of Pirates. They become the first team to lose back-to-back finals since Pirates themselves in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

Mbombela Magic

The Mbombela Stadium continues to be a fortress for Pirates in cup finals. This was their fourth final at the venue, and they’ve now won three (L1).

The 2025 final also marked the third time Pirates have won an MTN8 Final in open play during extra time, following similar triumphs in 2000-01 and 2011-12.

Moremi the Hero

Substitute Tshepang Moremi was the star of the show, scoring a brace and assisting the third goal. He opened the scoring in the 92nd minute, added his second in the 110th, and assisted Tshegofatso Mabasa’s goal in the 103rd minute.

Moremi became the first player since Daine Klate in 2016 to score a brace in an MTN8 Final, both at Mbombela. He has now scored in back-to-back matches in all competitions, having netted against Chippa United on August 31, also as a substitute.

Substitutes Shine

All three goals were scored by substitutes, showcasing Pirates’ depth and tactical flexibility. Oswin Appollis provided both assists for Moremi, while Mabasa continued his fine cup form, scoring in back-to-back MTN8 Finals and contributing to five goals in his last four MTN8 matches (3 goals, 2 assists).

Stats and Milestones

  • Pirates have now scored in eight consecutive MTN8 matches.
  • This was the 12th MTN8 Final in the PSL era to go into extra time, and only the fourth to be decided in open play.
  • The 3-0 scoreline is the biggest margin of victory in an MTN8 Final since BidVest Wits beat Sundowns by the same score in 2016—also at Mbombela.
  • This is only the fifth MTN8 Final in the PSL era to be won by two goals or more.
  • The win marks the 44th time a Gauteng-based team has won the MTN8, with the last seven winners all coming from the province.
  • This was the eighth MTN8 Final in the PSL era between Gauteng and Western Cape sides, with Gauteng teams now holding five wins (L3).

Coaching Legacy

New head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou lifted silverware in his debut season, following in the footsteps of Jose Riveiro, who won both the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup in his first campaign (2022-23). Ouaddou becomes the second successive Pirates coach to win a trophy in his debut season.

Stellenbosch’s Struggles

Coach Steve Barker suffered his second straight MTN8 Final defeat, and his fifth loss in 13 MTN8 matches (W7 D1).

This was also the first time Stellenbosch failed to score in an MTN8 match, in their 12th appearance.

In the first semi-final second leg, Pirates came from behind again to force a 1-1 draw in regulation time before the match went into post-match penalties, where the Buccaneers won 4-1.

Iqraam Rayners gave Sundowns a 17th minute lead but Kamogelo Sebelebele drew Pirates level in the 73rd minute to force the game into penalties. The first leg had also ended 1-1 and the shootouts were needed to separate the two sides.

Meanwhile, Stellenbosch had already put one foot in the final before the second leg after winning the corresponding fixture 2-0 a week earlier and it was all about protecting all they had.

However, Steve Barker’s men went ahead first with Mthetheleli Mthiyane scoring after 22 minutes and it was not until the 66th minute that Siphesihle Mkhize equalised but it was not enough to trouble Stellenbosch.
