Chiefs legend Khune explains why Pirates starboy Mofokeng ‘is not normal’

Veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has joined the growing wave of admiration for Orlando Pirates prodigy Relebohile Mofokeng, labelling him a rare talent who requires careful management to fulfill his potential.

Mofokeng has captured the spotlight with his exceptional form, netting an impressive five goals in his last two appearances—a run that included both a brace and a hat-trick. These performances have not only illuminated the Betway Premiership but have also solidified his reputation as one of South Africa’s most exciting young players.

Khune, the long-serving former Kaizer Chiefs captain, emphasised that the young forward’s recent achievements are anything but ordinary.

“We must give credit where it is due. Relebohile Mofokeng is a special talent,” Khune stated as per Soccer Laduma. “Week in and week out, he continues to show it. Five goals in two games. Man of the Match performances every weekend. That’s not normal. That’s not something you see every day.”

The former Bafana Bafana star highlighted Mofokeng’s mental fortitude as a key factor in his success, noting his ability to flourish under the immense pressure of playing for a club of Orlando Pirates’ stature.

“This boy is different. He’s got that spark, that hunger, that X-factor,” Khune continued. “He plays with confidence, with flair, with purpose. And he’s doing it at a big club like Orlando Pirates, under pressure, in front of thousands of fans. That’s not easy.”

While celebrating his talent, Khune also issued a strong caution, stressing the importance of safeguarding the player from the mounting expectations that accompany his rapid rise.

“He is a special player that needs to be protected,” he urged. “Not just for Pirates, but for the national team as well.”

With the FIFA World Cup just two months away, Khune believes Mofokeng could be a valuable asset for the national team if his development is handled correctly.

“We need him. We need his creativity, his energy, his fearlessness. But we also need to manage him properly. We can’t burn him out. We can’t put too much pressure on his shoulders. He’s still young. He’s still learning.”

Khune’s message, grounded in years of experience at the highest level, serves as a reminder that raw talent must be nurtured with proper guidance to prevent burnout from a demanding football schedule.

“But if we guide him right, if we support him, he can go all the way,” Khune concluded. “He can be one of the greats. He can be the face of South African football for years to come.
