Legal battle looming? Ex-Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro chasing his unpaid dues

Published on by

Spaniard coach Jose Riveiro made his name at Orlando Pirates in the three years he served them.

He joined the Buccaneers at the beginning of the 2022/23 season and won five trophies with the team. In his time, the Sea Robbers claimed three MTN8 crowns as well as two Nedbank Cup titles.

However, the 50-year-old refused to extend his stay in South Africa, choosing to take another challenge in Egypt with heavyweights Al Ahly. He, however, endured an inconsistent start and eventually he was fired after 94 days at the helm of the Red Devils.

Al Ahly struggled at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, generally managing just one win in the seven matches he led the team. Despite agreeing to part ways with the Egyptian outfit on mutual consent, recent reports allege he has not been fully settled.

How much is Riveiro owed?

“Riveiro’s contract stipulates that he is entitled to three months’ salary following the mutual termination of his contract,” Yallakora reported.

“An agreement was reached with Riveiro for a settlement amount of $98,000 (R1.5 million), and the Spanish coach initially agreed to resolve the matter with Al Ahly. The club asked Riveiro to come and collect his dues, but he refused to receive the $98,000.

“We have not received any information about Riveiro filing a complaint against the club. An agreement was reached to settle his dues, and the money is ready, but he suddenly backed out,” they concluded.

Riveiro is currently working as the manager for the Swedish outfit AIK Fotboll, a role he took a couple of months ago.
