Kaizer Chiefs vs Chippa United prediction, betting tips and match preview

Published on by

The 2025/26 Betway Premiership season concludes on Saturday, May 23, with Kaizer Chiefs hosting Chippa United at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. It is the final day of the campaign, and while Chiefs have already secured a top-three finish, the Chilli Boys head to KwaZulu-Natal scrapping for their Betway Premiership survival.

Victory in Durban would take Amakhosi to 57 points, equalling their best tally in six years and capping off a season that has lifted the mood at Naturena after two dismal campaigns. For Chippa, the arithmetic is simple but ruthless. Sitting 13th on 25 points, just one above the relegation playoff zone, they cannot afford a slip-up against a side that has not lost a single game at this venue in 2025/26.

Adding to the intrigue is the fact that brand-new Chippa head coach Brandon Truter will be taking charge of his first competitive fixture. The Chilli Boys have now had seven different coaches this season, a chaotic turnover that tells its own story about the instability running through the club from Gqeberha.

Kaizer Chiefs vs Chippa United match preview

Chiefs go into the weekend on the back of successive league wins over Sekhukhune United (2-0 on May 10) and AmaZulu (1-0 on May 16), both of which came at Moses Mabhida.

The AmaZulu victory was not pretty. Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen bailed out a sluggish team performance with a handful of saves before Glody Lilepo scored the only goal, only to be sent off moments later for pulling his shirt over his head in celebration.

It summed up a strange period for Amakhosi. The season is essentially done from a competitive standpoint, third place is wrapped up, and defender Reeve Frosler has admitted publicly that staying motivated has been difficult. But the 57-point target gives the squad something to focus on in what would otherwise feel like a dead rubber.

That tally would match what Chiefs achieved under Ernst Middendorp during the 2019/20 campaign, their best return in the modern era before this season. Coming off the back of a 10th-place finish and a ninth-place finish in the two previous campaigns, the improvement is significant.

Chiefs have been particularly strong at Moses Mabhida this term, winning all five matches played there across all competitions. The decision to relocate this fixture from FNB Stadium to Durban initially drew mixed reactions from supporters, but the venue has become something of a fortress. Co-coach Cedric Kaze has asked the Durban faithful to pack the ground one final time.

Chippa arrive in much darker spirits. A 2-0 defeat to Golden Arrows last weekend extended their winless run to four games and prompted yet another coaching change, with Truter becoming the seventh man to occupy the dugout since August.

The numbers make grim reading for anyone connected with the Eastern Cape club. Five wins all season from 29 matches. 23 goals scored, which works out to fewer than one per game. A goal difference of minus 21. And just one win in their last 11 league outings.

To secure survival outright, Chippa need three points in Durban. A draw might suffice if Marumo Gallants (14th, 24 points) and Orbit College (15th, 24 points) both fail to win their respective fixtures against Stellenbosch and Orlando Pirates. But banking on other results going your way is never a comfortable position on the final day.

Head-to-head record

The history between these sides favours Amakhosi. Across 25 meetings in all competitions, Chiefs have won 12, Chippa have won eight and five have ended in draws.

The reverse fixture this season took place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on December 3, 2025, finishing 0-0.

That scoreline does not reflect how the game played out. Chiefs had 55.5 percent of possession, fired in 17 shot attempts to Chippa’s six and put five efforts on target compared to the hosts’ one. Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabili was named Player of the Match after an outstanding display between the posts, keeping his side level through sheer stubbornness.

Before that draw, Chiefs had beaten Chippa in each of their two previous meetings. The Chilli Boys’ last win in this fixture came on April 6, 2024, when they ran out 2-0 victors on home soil in Gqeberha.

Team news: outs, doubts and predicted lineups

Chiefs will be without two of their most important attacking players for this match.

Glody Lilepo is banned after his red card against AmaZulu. The Congolese midfielder had put Chiefs ahead before pulling his shirt off in celebration and collecting a second yellow. It was a moment of needless indiscipline that cost his side for the remaining 30 minutes of that fixture, and now costs them their creator for the season finale.

Flavio da Silva is also suspended through an accumulation of yellow cards. Chiefs have picked up 52 bookings this season, the third highest in the division behind Stellenbosch (58) and Orbit College (54), so discipline has been a recurring issue.

Dillan Solomons remains injured and is unlikely to feature before his contract expires at the end of June. His future at Naturena is uncertain given the amount of football he has missed this season.

On a brighter note, four Chiefs players were named in Hugo Broos’s preliminary Bafana Bafana squad for the 2026 World Cup on Thursday. Petersen, Bradley Cross, Thabiso Monyane and Lebohang Maboe all made the cut, with the final squad to be announced on May 27. That adds an extra layer of personal motivation heading into the weekend.

Mduduzi Shabalala is the most likely candidate to step in for Lilepo on the left of the attacking trident, while Ranga Chivaviro should replace da Silva through the middle as the central striker.

Chippa have no significant injury concerns heading into the weekend, though it is worth noting that Truter has had fewer than five full days to assess his squad and organise a gameplan. The new boss is expected to lean on the experience of captain Abbubaker Mobara at the back, while retaining the 4-4-2 shape used under the previous interim coaching staff.

Kaizer Chiefs predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Brandon Petersen; Reeve Frosler, Zitha Kwinika, Inacio Miguel, Paseka Mako; Lehlogonolo Matlou, Lebohang Maboe; Mfundo Vilakazi, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Mduduzi Shabalala; Ranga Chivaviro

Chippa United predicted XI (4-4-2): Dumisani Msibi; Sirgio Kammies, Abbubaker Mobara, Harold Majadibodu, Malebogo Modise; Azola Matrose, Goodman Mosele, Khaya Mfecane, Banele Hlophe; Justice Figuareido, Asanele Bonani

Petersen has been the standout individual in Amakhosi’s resurgent season, with 15 clean sheets providing the bedrock for a top-three finish. Mobara carries Chippa’s survival hopes on his shoulders; his experience and composure at the back will be tested to the limit against a side that dominated the reverse fixture in December without finding the net.

The managers

This could be the final game for Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef as Kaizer Chiefs co-coaches.

Their contracts run until the end of June and the club has given no indication of an extension. The pair were originally brought to Naturena as assistants under Nasreddine Nabi before stepping into the top job on an interim basis.

Whatever happens next, the facts of their tenure speak for themselves. Chiefs finished ninth and 10th in the two seasons before this one. Under Kaze and Ben Youssef, Amakhosi have ended the campaign in third and qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup. That is a considerable improvement by any measure.

Kaze has spoken warmly about the support the club has received in Durban this season and used his pre-match media session to ask fans to pack Moses Mabhida for the occasion. There is a real sense that the co-coaches want to leave the stage on their own terms.

On the other touchline, Truter faces a very different kind of occasion.

The former Moroka Swallows, Sekhukhune United and AmaZulu coach was appointed earlier this week after Chippa chairman Siviwe Mpengesi pulled the trigger on yet another coaching change following the loss to Golden Arrows. Truter replaces interim man Nkosohlanga Dikeni, who lasted just two matches in charge.

Truter is the seventh coach to take charge of Chippa this season. Before him came Sinethemba Badela, Musa Nyatama, Morgan Mammila, Luc Eymael, Vusumuzi Vilakazi and Dikeni. The revolving door at the club would be almost comic if the consequences were not so serious.

To his credit, Truter does have experience of working with sides under pressure. He guided Moroka Swallows back into the top flight and most recently managed second-tier outfit Upington City. Whether five days of preparation is enough to change the trajectory of an entire season remains to be seen.

Tactical preview

Kaze and Ben Youssef will almost certainly keep faith with the 4-2-3-1 system that has underpinned their season.

The double pivot of Matlou and Maboe sits in front of the back four and provides a reliable shield, while Ngcobo operates as the number 10, drifting between the lines and linking midfield to attack. Vilakazi brings directness from the right, and with Shabalala likely coming in on the left, the width should remain intact despite Lilepo’s absence.

The issue is up front. Without da Silva’s hold-up play and movement, Chivaviro offers a different profile, one that is more about physical presence than timing runs in behind. That could alter the way Chiefs build their attacks, with more emphasis on crossing and set-piece delivery rather than combination play through the middle.

Truter will almost certainly set Chippa up in a 4-4-2 that prioritises defensive structure over creativity.

Two disciplined banks of four behind Figuareido and Bonani is the shape that Chippa used to frustrate Chiefs in December’s 0-0 draw in Gqeberha. The objective will be the same here: stay compact, deny space through the middle, and hope that Chiefs’ makeshift forward line struggles to break through.

The risk of that approach is that Chippa leave themselves with very little to hurt Chiefs on the counter. Their season-long record of 23 goals in 29 matches shows just how limited their attacking output has been, and relying on Figuareido and Bonani to produce something out of nothing against a defence that concedes 0.6 goals per game is a tough ask.

One area where Chippa could cause problems is from set pieces. Majadibodu and Mobara are both decent in the air, and if Chippa can win free kicks and corners in dangerous areas, they have the physical presence to threaten from dead-ball situations. Chiefs’ back line will need to be switched on from the opening whistle.

Kaizer Chiefs vs Chippa United betting tips

Odds correct at time of publication and subject to change. Always gamble responsibly.

Best bet

Under 2.5 goals

Six of the last 10 H2H fixtures have produced fewer than three goals. Chippa average 0.50 goals per away game this season, and Chiefs are missing their two top scorers through suspension. ~1.70

Value bet

Kaizer Chiefs win and under 2.5 goals

Combines the expected outcome (a home win) with the expected scoring pattern (low goals). Better value than a straight Chiefs win at odds of around 1.50. ~2.25

Long shot

Kaizer Chiefs to win to nil

Petersen has kept 15 clean sheets this term. Chippa have scored 23 goals in 29 league matches. Those numbers make this market more realistic than the odds suggest. ~2.40

A straight Kaizer Chiefs victory sits at around 1.50, which is short given that the hosts will be missing both da Silva and Lilepo through suspension. The smarter play is on the goal market. Chippa have failed to score in the majority of their recent away fixtures and are averaging under one goal per game across the entire season. At the other end, the reverse fixture in December showed that Chippa’s low block can at least delay the inevitable, and without their first-choice forwards Chiefs may take time to break through. Under 2.5 goals at around 1.70 is the pick with the best combination of value and likelihood.

Kaizer Chiefs vs Chippa United prediction

Everything points toward a narrow home win.

Chiefs have not lost at Moses Mabhida all season, their defensive record is among the best in the division, and Petersen has been consistently excellent. Even with da Silva and Lilepo missing, the quality gap between these two squads is large.

Chippa will set up to make life difficult, just as they did in December when they held Chiefs to 0-0. But December’s draw came at Chippa’s home ground with a settled coaching setup. This time the Chilli Boys are away from home, under a head coach who has had fewer than five days to work with the group, and carrying the weight of a potential relegation playoff on their shoulders.

The pressure could freeze Chippa’s attackers, while Chiefs’ experienced back line and midfield should eventually find a way through. A single goal will probably settle it.

Predicted final score

Kaizer Chiefs

1

Chippa United

0

Chiefs are unbeaten across five matches at Moses Mabhida this season. Chippa have won once in 11 league outings and are managed by a coach who arrived five days ago. Without their two leading scorers Chiefs will not run riot, but their defensive excellence and the quality of Petersen, Ngcobo and Vilakazi should be enough to find one goal and hold on.

Chiefs finish on 57 points and give the Durban faithful a proper send-off. Chippa face an anxious wait for results from elsewhere to learn whether their season is truly over, or whether a playoff still stands between them and another year in the top flight.
