Magesi FC have appointed former Orlando Pirates, TS Galaxy and Sekhukhune United coach Owen da Gama as their new tactician to replace Clinton Larsen.
Larsen quit Magesi this month, citing interference in his work, with the club rock bottom on the PSL table even after their shock run to the Carling Knockout victory.
Da Gama is now the man tasked with reviving the fortunes of the newly-promoted side, who have struggled to cope with the demands of top flight football, despite their fairytale run to the cup win.
Magesi are bottom of the log in the PSL with just six points after winning just one of their 10 games while suffering six defeats, including Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Orlando Pirates, which they played under caretaker coach Papi Zothwane.
Who is Owen da Gama?
Da Gama is a highly experienced tactician who has managed 388 games in South Africa’s top flight, winning 124, drawing 137 and losing 126, with his last job in the dugout coming in the 2020-21 season when he handled Sekhukhune alongside McDonald Makhubedu.
The 63-year-old took South Africa’s U23 to the 2016 Rio Olympics having previously handled Bafana Bafana briefly as well as Orlando Pirates, Free State Stars and Bloemfontein Celtics. He also coached Highlands Park and TS Galaxy while had spells in Belgium and Ireland.
Da Gama has a tough job on his hands to keep Magesi in the PSL and his first game will come against one of his former sides in TS Galaxy.
