Cassius Mailula’s eye-watering Mamelodi Sundowns salary revealed

Returning Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Cassius Mailula is still on the same pay that he was earning in the MLS, according to his agent Karabo Mathang-Tshabuse.

Mailula returned to Sundowns last month after three years away, having signed for MLS club FC Toronto in July 2023, following a breakout season with the Brazilians.

However, things did not go well for him in the MLS as he made just five league appearances with the club then shipping him out on loan to Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club in the 2024-25 season before another temporary stay at Belgian side Kortrijk last term.

Mailula still on MLS salary at Sundowns

Following the end of his contract, Sundowns snapped him up as a free agent and that decision looks to be a masterstroke as Mailula has so far scored three goals in four games, having started one match and come off the bench thrice.

Mathang-Tshabuse says the player’s terms have not changed now that he is playing in South Africa.

“We don’t come down [in terms of salary],” the PManagement Agency boss said on Metro FM. “No, we didn’t come down. I am not telling you he went up or anything, I am just saying he didn’t go down. He is with a team that has two stars,” she further stated.

According to the MLS Players Association, Mailula was on a base annual salary of $350,000 (R5.7 million) and $366,003 (R6 million) in guaranteed earnings at FC Toronto.

That translates to an estimated monthly payout of $30,500 (R489,852), meaning Mailula is among the top earners at Sundowns, given goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is considered to be among those highly paid at the club on a reported monthly salary of R500,000.

Mailula is, however, proving to be good value for money as he was the match winner in Sundowns’ MTN8 quarter-final against Polokwane City, rescued a point for Miguel Cardoso’s side by scoring the equaliser against Kaizer Chiefs last weekend, before making the points safe by slotting home the second in their 2-0 win over Marumo Gallants on Wednesday.
