Renowned Bafana Bafana superfan Joyce “Mama Joy” Chauke is set to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, but her journey will not be funded by the government.
Following a contentious social media exchange with Minister Gayton McKenzie, Chauke has landed an ambassadorial role with the new African sports brand abOVEnormal, which will sponsor her trip.
The controversy ignited when Chauke publicly expressed her disappointment over the department’s decision not to fund supporters’ travel to the upcoming tournament, co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada. Her frustration culminated in a social media post calling for a change in leadership.

“Let’s just pray for the president to give us the new minister of sport who can love fans,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
McKenzie’s brutal response to Mama Joy
McKenzie’s reply drew widespread criticism for its personal and dismissive tone. “We got you a husband, let him pay for the love of his life,” he posted. “Euro is strong, Frenchmen are known to be romantic, let him pay Sista Joy.”
However, on Wednesday, Chauke announced her new partnership with abOVEnormal, confirming her attendance at the World Cup.

Speaking to City Press, an emotional Chauke shared her excitement. “I am going to the World Cup. I am excited and over the moon about this opportunity,” she said. “To me, it is further proof that you cannot keep a good person down. When God says yes, no one can say no.”
Chauke highlighted that the opportunity to work with Masingita Masunga, the founder of abOVEnormal, was a key factor in her decision. Masunga, who was born with cerebral palsy, is a celebrated figure in South Africa, known for her advocacy for equality and inclusion for women with disabilities.
Bafana superfan overjoyed by sponsorship
“I didn’t think twice when I received the call to join them as an ambassador,” Chauke stated. “I know they stand for a good cause, and I hope my involvement will open more doors for them to fulfil their dreams of helping others.”

Their collaboration will extend beyond the World Cup, with the pair already embarking on a promotional roadshow for the brand in Limpopo.
Masunga described bringing Chauke on board as a “no-brainer” and confirmed that the brand is committed to raising the necessary funds for her trip.
“We are already on our way to Limpopo to spread the message,” Masunga explained. “We have also lined up fundraising activities to get as many people as possible to contribute towards this cause.”
She added that abOVEnormal aims to be Africa’s leading sports and fitness brand, dedicated to empowering a new generation to surpass their limits. “Rising abOVEnormal isn’t just a statement – it’s a movement,” Masunga concluded.
