Latest news about Mamelodi Sundowns, in the last 24 hours including questions about Themba Zwane and Relebohile Mofokeng, how the former proved doubters wrong & more.

Sundowns legend Zwane or Mofokeng?

Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Wayne Arendse has dived into the contentious Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos’ playmaker choice, giving insight on Relebohile Mofokeng and Themba Zwane as the 2026 FIFA World Cup creative options.

Since taking the South Africa reins in May 2021, coach Broos has often highlighted the number 10 and eight roles as some of the problematic positions in his team. Desperately in need of creativity in his side, various players have been tried out.

“It’s the big stage, all eyes are on the World Cup. I hope the team does well and gets out of the group. But it’s going to be very tough,” Arendse told FARPost.

“However, you never know because football will surprise you, and it’s going to be very interesting.

“Yeah, I think if I’m not mistaken before AFCON, he [Mofokeng] had an injury as well. After that, he helped Pirates to win the league with consistency. He is the go-to player in terms of creativity.

“The time is right for him to shine on the international stage. If he plays with the freedom he had at Pirates, he will shine. I hope he can take it for us at the World Cup.

“I don’t see him at Pirates next season because he needs to move. He will definitely be a nominee for PSL Player of the Year or probably win it. It will give him confidence going forward.”

I doubted Zwane first timeI saw him!

Football administrator Sinky Mnisi has opened up on how Themba Zwane got to be sold to The Brazilians back in January 2011.

Mnisi, who owned Vardos, where ‘Shiga’ was playing his amateur football, has told the story of how insistent Sundowns were in acquiring the Tembisa-born midfielder.

“I had revived Classic Stars (later changed name to Vardos) after it was sold to Maritzburg and somebody came to me and said ‘there’s this young man who is skinny but he’s very much talented'” Mnisi told Radio 2000’s Game On.

“He came in and within the first fifteen minutes I was convinced that he’s a good player.

“He was 15 (years old) when I signed him, the game I remember vividly was our last match at Makhulong. We were playing against the development of Kaizer Chiefs, it was packed. When it was 1-1, Themba was doing his thing and he made it 2-1 with a shot from 30 yards.

“Then I got a call from Wits, Swallows, I got a call from seven (teams) including Mr (Jomo) Sono. The last team I got a call from was Pirates. Remember it’s December and in Tembisa there’s the Phillys Games and Themba went to play, he was doing his thing and these people started calling again, I remember I had to cut my holiday short, when I got home, I found ‘Barnes’ Bapela waiting for me,” Mnisi concluded.
