Mamelodi Sundowns have called out fans who attacked the technical staff, including Sporting Director Flemming Berg on Friday.
Berg was on the end of some rough treatment from a section of fans following the Brazilians’ 2-2 draw with Sudan’s Al-Hilal in the CAF Champions League on Friday.
The fans started chanting “Pitso, Pitso” in the stands during the match and did the same at full time with coach Miguel Cardoso booed by the furious supporters.
Sundowns slam ill-disciplined fans
However, the situation escalated as the players and technical team were leaving the Loftus Versfeld Stadium when a fan doused Berg with water, an ugly scene that has been condemned by the club.
“Mamelodi Sundowns condemns the behaviour and conduct of the few ill-disciplined supporters who were disrupting members of the Sundowns Technical Team as they were leaving the stadium after the Sundowns and Al Hilal match,” Sundowns said via a statement on Tuesday morning.
“Sundowns has always encouraged active supporter participation and engagement, which must always be done with respect and courtesy.
What will befall the culprits?
“Mamelodi Sundowns will not tolerate any threats, illegal behaviour or intimidation by any of its supporters or fans at any of its matches. Appropriate legal or disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against those whose conduct is found to be illegal or contrary to the policies or rules of the Sundowns supporters.
“The players and technical team of Mamelodi Sundowns are focusing on retaining the league title and successfully competing in all cup competitions. This can only be achieved with the support and encouragement of the Mamelodi Sundowns supporters,” the statement concluded.
Sundowns will be back in action on Tuesday night when they visit Sekhukhune United in the PSL, looking to go three points clear of second-placed Orlando Pirates.
