The Zwane story

After lifting the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup, Themba Zwane has now accumulated an extraordinary collection of 19 major trophies during his illustrious career at Mamelodi Sundowns, establishing himself as one of the most decorated players in South African football history.

The 37-year-old midfielder, affectionately known as “Mshishi”, joined Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2011 and has since become the club’s longest-serving player with over 400 appearances. Zwane’s trophy cabinet tells the story of sustained excellence at both domestic and continental level, spanning 14 years with The Brazilians.

The bulk of Zwane’s success has come in the Betway Premiership, where he has collected nine league winner’s medals during the 2015/16, 2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons.

His most recent league triumph came in May 2025 when Sundowns clinched their eighth consecutive championship, though injury limited Zwane to just one start and six substitute appearances during that campaign.

Beyond domestic league glory, Zwane has conquered Africa twice, winning the CAF Champions League in 2015/16 and again in 2025/26. The midfielder also lifted the CAF Super Cup in 2017 and the African Football League in 2023, cementing his status as a continental champion.

In South African cup competitions, Zwane has been equally prolific. He boasts three Nedbank Cup titles from the 2014/15, 2019/20 and 2021/22 seasons, two Telkom Knockout trophies in 2015 and 2019, and one MTN8 medal from 2021.

Ex-Chiefs coach backs Sundowns to win Intercontinental Cup

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson backs the current Mamelodi Sundowns team to go all the way in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

Sundowns players did quite well on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, securing a 2-1 victory over Saudi side Al Hilal to be crowned champions of the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup.

Former Bafana Bafana striker Johnson says Saturday’s performance and result prove that Sundowns are no longer just a continental force — they are a global team.

“Sundowns have been preparing for this for a long time; over the years they’ve been chasing the Champions League, and they’ve won it twice. They are now competing on the global stage, vying for cups like the Intercontinental Cup and the Club World Cup. They are a global brand now,” Johnson told KickOff.

“Al Hilal is not a walkover team, hey; they are a very good team, but when you look at Sundowns, you have to give credit to the whole team. They are all heroes. The weather at Loftus Versfeld couldn’t be a problem for Al Ahli because they play in hot conditions all the time. Sometimes Sundowns are going to play in ice-cold places; they need to be prepared for that because they are now a global team.

“The scouting at Sundowns has become better than it was in previous years. A game between Sundowns and Paris Saint-Germain will be great to watch since PSG are the number one team in the world at the moment. Well, football is round, and because of that, anything can happen. Sundowns have what it takes to go all the way,” he concluded.
