Mamelodi Sundowns will be following the Soweto Derby with much interest on Sunday as the outcome of the match will have a bearing on whether they are champions again or not.

Sundowns are one point behind Orlando Pirates, who have 58 from 25 matches, but they have played 24 and by the time the derby is over, they will have two games in hand.

Therefore, a win for Chiefs will greatly aid Sundowns’ cause as if they beat Richards Bay later on Sunday, they will go two points ahead and with a game in hand while even a draw will take them a point above the Soweto giants and still have a match at hand.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns forward Katlego Mphela has named two players from his ex-team as among three who deserve the PSL Player of the Season award.

“My top three will obviously be Rele [Relebohile Mofokeng]. He must be there. He has been consistent. He will be my first choice,” Mphela said as per Soccer Laduma.

“And then Khuliso Mudau. He had a good season. He started slow because of the issues he had with the team. (Iqraam) Rayners has to be there because he has been consistent in front of goal. Those would be my top three.”

Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane has lauded Denis Onyango for being the silent leader of the team as he ensures the high standards remain and gives directions when things are not right.

“Denis won leagues at SuperSport and when he came to Sundowns, some of us as youngsters he was trying to teach us and say; ‘you have to adapt to this mentality of winning.’ He played a big role, even today, I am the captain of Mamelodi Sundowns but before I make decisions, I still consult Denis,” Zwane said on the Pitchside podcast.

“He is the one who directs us as a team. He is our leader; he tells us what to do then we follow. He is playing an amazing role and I have so much respect for Denis. He is the one who reminds the young ones the culture of the team.”
