Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs: Soweto Derby Preview, Team News, Predicted Lineups and Betting Tips

Published on by

South African football goes on pause for nothing except this. A sold-out FNB Stadium welcomes the 182nd Soweto Derby on Sunday, April 26, with Orlando Pirates hosting Kaizer Chiefs in the biggest Betway Premiership fixture of the season so far.

The stakes could not be higher for the Buccaneers. Sitting top of the table on 58 points, Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side hold a single-point lead over Mamelodi Sundowns, who still have a game in hand. A first league title since the 2011/12 campaign is finally within touching distance, but any slip on derby day could flip the race on its head.

Chiefs arrive with their own agenda. Third-placed Amakhosi are seven points clear of AmaZulu and eyeing a top-three finish that would secure Caf Confederation Cup football next season. More than that, they want revenge for the 3-0 hiding Pirates handed them on February 28, 2026, a result that left fans humiliated and co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef under intense pressure.

Match preview: Title race, top-three ambitions and a derby on a knife-edge

Pirates have turned into the Betway Premiership’s most fearsome attacking unit, registering 50 goals in 25 matches. That makes them the league’s top scorers, and the numbers back up what the eye has been telling supporters for months.

Form has also been excellent. Three wins and two draws in their last five league outings includes an emphatic 3-0 success over AmaZulu in their most recent match, a result that nudged them back above Sundowns at the summit.

The bigger picture looks even better. Pirates are on an eight-match unbeaten run in the league, a sequence stretching across six wins and two draws that has coincided with the emergence of Relebohile Mofokeng as the competition’s most influential attacker.

There is a nagging worry, though. Recent draws against Siwelele and Richards Bay hinted at a side who can struggle once they fall behind or face well-organised pressing, and those dropped points could prove costly if Sundowns keep up their own relentless pace.

Chiefs, meanwhile, have become a different animal since their heavy defeat at Orlando earlier this season. A run of five wins and one draw across their last six matches has restored belief at Naturena, with Brandon Petersen keeping clean sheets and the forward line finally clicking.

In that unbeaten run, Amakhosi forwards have scored 12 goals in six matches. The defence has conceded only twice since a 1-0 loss at Richards Bay on March 3, which explains why Ouaddou has publicly warned his players about a “new” Chiefs side.

Away form, however, remains a question mark. Chiefs’ record at the FNB Stadium against Pirates has been grim of late, and the psychological scars from that 3-0 loss two months ago cannot be ignored.

Both sides also carry broader motivations. Pirates chase a piece of history, Chiefs chase continental football, and Kaze and Ben Youssef chase the contract that keeps them in the dugout beyond this season.

When the teams meet on Sunday, it will mark the 182nd Soweto Derby since the rivalry was first contested on January 24, 1970. The long-term numbers still favour Amakhosi.

Chiefs hold 74 wins to Pirates’ 48, with 54 draws, five abandoned fixtures and a 230-196 goal tally in their favour according to the SuperSport archive. That said, the modern balance tells a very different story.

Pirates have won six of the last seven league and cup meetings between the clubs, and the last four head-to-heads across all competitions have all gone the Buccaneers’ way. The reverse fixture on February 28, 2026 was a prime example, with Pirates dismantling Chiefs 3-0 at the FNB Stadium through a performance built on relentless pressing and clinical finishing.

Mofokeng grabbed an assist that day and earned a standout 7.9 FotMob rating. Chiefs managed just two shots on target across the 90 minutes.

There has not been a draw in the fixture for 17 meetings, with the last stalemate a 2-2 Telkom Knockout tie in 2019. That suggests one side or the other will leave FNB with three points on Sunday.

Ouaddou could not have asked for a better medical bulletin ahead of this one. Assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi confirmed earlier in the week that the only absentees are long-term casualties Tapelo Xoki and Sihle Nduli, both of whom remain in rehab.

Everyone else is available. The Moroccan boss joked that his physio room was “empty” for the first time, and admitted his only headache is choosing from a squad in which almost every player wants in.

Chiefs, by contrast, have a defensive crisis on their hands. Rushwin Dortley and Zitha Kwinika are long-term absentees, and Aden McCarthy has now joined them after picking up a knock last week.

That leaves Kaze and Ben Youssef likely to patch together a centre-back pairing that could include Inacio Miguel and Rushine de Reuck or Thabo Cele dropping deeper. Against the most potent attack in the division, it is the last thing the Soweto outfit needed.

Up top, Flavio Silva’s rise has been the story of Chiefs’ second half of the season. The Bissau-Guinean forward has nine goals in all competitions and earned Chiefs legend status in the building after a run of decisive contributions from the bench and, more recently, as a starter.

Mofokeng is heading in the opposite direction to the panic-station headlines around Chiefs. The 21-year-old has scored 10 goals in his last 12 league appearances, an absurd run for a wide attacker who had no goal involvements until late January.

Oswin Appollis has been his foil on the other flank. The pair combined for Pirates’ second goal against AmaZulu last time out and have taken turns punishing defences across the run-in.

Predicted XI: Orlando Pirates (4-3-3)

Chaine; Lebitso, Sibisi, Ndaba, Seema; Makhaula, Mbatha, Maswanganyi; Appollis, Mbuthuma, Mofokeng.

Predicted XI: Kaizer Chiefs (4-2-3-1)

The Managers: Ouaddou’s balanced build vs Chiefs’ stats-driven duo

Abdeslam Ouaddou, Orlando Pirates

Ouaddou’s first season in Soweto has delivered everything Pirates fans could reasonably have hoped for. Two trophies are already in the bag, Mofokeng has kicked on into a genuine star, and the Buccaneers have turned into a side that scores freely while conceding almost nothing.

The Frenchman, born in Morocco, has spoken openly this week about the global interest in the derby, saying people from Europe and the United States have been in touch asking about the fixture. That external pressure has not rattled a coach who spent his playing days at the likes of Fulham and Stade Rennais.

Across the technical area, Kaze and Ben Youssef continue to operate as a pair. Formerly Nasreddine Nabi’s assistants and translators, the duo took charge when the Tunisian departed and endured a rough opening run that included a four-match losing streak.

Everything changed after a press conference in which Kaze, according to the Sunday Tribune, “dished out numbers as if he were conducting a statistics class.” Chiefs have been a different team since, and a derby win on Sunday could be the performance that earns the pair permanent contracts next season.

Tactical preview: Pressing Pirates vs counter-attacking Chiefs

Expect Pirates to line up in a 4-3-3 that morphs into a front-heavy 4-2-4 when they have sustained possession. Makhaula holds the base, Mbatha and Maswanganyi carry the ball, and Mofokeng and Appollis are encouraged to drift infield to link with centre-forward Yanela Mbuthuma.

Pirates’ pressing has been the foundation of their title challenge. Winning the ball high allows their wingers to cut inside, and those diagonal runs have carved open defences far tighter than the one Chiefs will put out on Sunday.

The defensive spine has been rock solid. Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine has 17 clean sheets, the most of any goalkeeper in the league, and the Ndaba-Sibisi centre-back pairing has proven capable of handling quick transitions.

Chiefs will almost certainly go counter-attacking. Kaze and Ben Youssef are expected to set up in a 4-2-3-1 with Cele and Maart shielding a makeshift back four, Mduduzi Shabalala floating off the striker and Silva leading the line.

That shape would force Pirates to break down a compact mid-block, and Chiefs will hope to hit their hosts on the break using Shabalala’s running and Silva’s hold-up play. The Amakhosi attack has worked best when Shabalala has been given freedom to pick his moments.

The tactical tension is clear. Chiefs’ backline is depleted and facing the most potent forward line in the division, but if Silva can stretch Pirates and Shabalala can find pockets behind the midfield, there is a counter-punching route to a result.

Set-pieces also tilt slightly in Chiefs’ favour. Petersen’s distribution is excellent and Msimango has been a regular aerial threat, which will matter against a Pirates side that has occasionally switched off from restarts.

Betting tips and predictions: Finding value in a tight derby

The market has Pirates as strong favourites to win, typically around the 1.57 mark, with Chiefs at around 5.50 and the draw floating at 3.80. That is too short to back the home side outright and leaves plenty of room for a smarter alternative.

The obvious angle is Mofokeng. He has been directly involved in a goal in almost every game he has played since the turn of the year, and Chiefs are set to field a depleted defence behind midfielders who cannot be expected to hold him down for 90 minutes.

Main value tip: Relebohile Mofokeng to score or assist

At roughly 1.85-2.00 across most South African sportsbooks, Mofokeng anytime goalscorer or assist provider is the standout value play. He registered an assist in the reverse fixture and his recent returns make this the bet with the strongest underlying data.

Alternative tip: Orlando Pirates to win and under 3.5 goals

Priced at around 2.10, this bet leans into Pirates’ home form and defensive discipline while accepting that Chiefs have tightened up since their battering in February. The reverse fixture went 3-0 and stayed under 3.5, which is a useful pointer.

Outside shot: Both teams to score no

At around 2.10-2.20, this is a tempting number given that Chaine has 17 clean sheets and Petersen has kept six clean sheets in his last eight outings. It is not the safest play given the quality at both ends, but the value is there.

Final score prediction: Orlando Pirates 2-0 Kaizer Chiefs

There are too many factors pointing in Pirates’ direction to ignore. Chiefs’ defensive injury list is the main one, because coming into the FNB Stadium with patched-up centre-backs against a Mofokeng-Appollis axis is a recipe for damage limitation at best.

Pirates’ home record, their eight-match unbeaten run, their league-best goal return and their league-best clean-sheet count all line up in their favour. The title-race urgency should sharpen rather than paralyse a squad that has responded well to pressure all season.

Chiefs will have moments, particularly if Silva can connect with Shabalala in transition. However, a side that has struggled to break down teams that play a low block, as seen in their goalless draw with Polokwane City, is unlikely to outscore hosts of this quality from open play.

One goal in each half for Pirates feels like the most likely script. Mofokeng either finishes it himself or teed up, Mbuthuma pounces on a second half rebound, and Chaine secures another clean sheet to keep the Buccaneers one point clear at the top heading into the final weeks of the Betway Premiership season.
