Latest about Mamelodi Sundowns, in the last 24 years, including decision to extend duo’s contract, how Masandawana survived intimidation by AS FAR Rabat and more.

Sundowns extend star’s contract

Mamelodi Sundowns have exercised their option to extend Terrence Mashego’s contract for another season, while Durban City FC and Stellenbosch FC are eyeing him.

“Durban City are not the only club pursuing the former Cape Town City FC defender. Stellenbosch FC have also emerged as admirers of Mashego and are keen to secure his services on loan for the 2026/27 season. Stellies coach Gavin Hunt, who worked closely with Mashego during his time at Durban City, is believed to be keen to reunite with the 29-year-old,” FARPost reported.

The Cape Winelands club are expected to undergo significant squad changes ahead of the new campaign, with Hunt looking to bring in fresh faces after clearing several players from his squad.

“Mashego has reportedly been identified as one of the players Hunt would like to add to his rebuilding project, although Stellenbosch would prefer a loan rather than a permanent transfer.

“Despite the growing interest, Sundowns remain in control of the player’s immediate future after exercising their option. The newly crowned African champions now face a decision on whether to reintegrate Mashego into their squad or sanction another loan move to ensure he continues to play regular football,” they added.

Morena decision made

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Thapelo Morena is on the verge of another major career milestone after Mamelodi Sundowns exercised the option to extend his stay for an 11th season at Chloorkop.

The versatile 32-year-old, who joined Sundowns in 2016 from Bloemfontein Celtic, is closing in on making his 350th appearance across all competitions for the Tshwane giants, reports SABC Sport. Despite missing Bafana Bafana’s World Cup squad through injury, Morena remains a key figure under Miguel Cardoso.

How Sundowns survived AS FAR’s intimidation

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has opened up on how they managed the gamesmanship and intimidating atmosphere from AS FAR Rabat in the CAF Champions League final second leg.

Cardoso has revealed how they are dealing with the players’ minds on how to handle the gamesmanships from the North Africans, in particular AS FAR, who did not make the stadium experience hospitable in the final second-leg.

“I was not expecting that, I was expecting a wonderful ambience, aggressive, we experienced (that at) MC Alger, also incredible, last year also in Cairo (against Al Ahly) but the stadium of (AS FAR) the people are so close, you can see the faces of the people close to you, as the game starts, you hear this sound, I think it is the loudest sound I’ve ever heard in my life,” Cardoso told The Pitchside Podcast.

“That is the mindset we have to develop on the players, to make them understand why they are doing that, why they are harassing you, why they want you to feel smaller, because they are afraid of us. They don’t do that when they play a small team, they take it as a normal match.

“But they want to make us feel smaller by that attitude. The question is how you take it on your head, because if they are afraid and react like that, why should we be afraid, you have to enjoy it! It’s one thing to speak about it and have that attitude,” Cardoso added.
