Matthews & Adams put SuperSport to the sword as Sundowns complete Tshwane derby double

Published on by

Mamelodi Sundowns continued their dominance of the Tshwane derby following a 3-0 thrashing of cross-town rivals SuperSport United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday.

Sundowns had Tashreeq Matthews to thank as he scored twice but playmaker Lucas Ribeiro had a fantastic game, orchestrating most of their attacks.

Sundowns went ahead after just 11 minutes when new signing Jayden Adams, making his first start, scored on his debut.

The midfielder made a good run at the near post before receiving a great pass from Zuko Mdunyelwa and he slotted past SuperSport goalkeeper Minenhle Mbanjwa.

Sundowns double advantage

Seven minutes later, Sundowns should have had the second one following a swift counter-attack but Peter Shalulile, rewarded with a start after Sunday’s heroics against Golden Arrows, hit the post.

SuperSport’s best chance of the game came in the 28th minute via a set-piece. A freekick just outside the box saw Gape Moralo come close to equalising when his shot hit the upright at the corner with Ronwen Williams beaten.

Sundowns should have been 2-0 up after 40 minutes when Ribeiro did all the good work and squared the ball to Shalulile but the striker failed to score after taking too long on the ball.

The second one would, however arrive, two minutes later when Williams brought in a ball that went past everyone and with the SuperSport defenders not dealing with it, Matthews reacted quickest to get the ball into an empty net.

How does the league table look?

After the break, Sundowns took just four minutes to extend their lead when Matthews found the target once more after being set up by Ribeiro.

The victory extends Sundowns’ good record against SuperSport and completes a double over their local rivals this season following their 2-0 win in September.

Sundowns also kept their six-point point lead at the top of the table as they are now on 39 points from 14 matches while Orlando Pirates are second on 33.
