Sipho Mbule’s surprising move to Iraqi Stars League side Zakho SC came after the midfielder rejected significant interest from North African clubs, according to his agent, Mike Makaab of Prosport International.
The Bafana Bafana international was unveiled by the Iraqi club on Saturday, joining as a free agent. His departure from Orlando Pirates at the end of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season marks a fresh start for the talented player, whose career has faced off-field disruptions in recent years.
Mbule‘s time with the Soweto giants was a tale of two halves. After signing a one-year deal in July 2025 with a two-year extension option, the former SuperSport United star initially thrived under Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.

Reduced game time for Sipho Mbule
He quickly became a key figure in central midfield, instrumental in the club’s MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup triumphs during the first half of the season. However, his fortunes changed dramatically after the mid-season break.
Mbule found himself on the fringes of the squad, with the technical team preferring other options in midfield, leading to a sharp decline in his playing time.
The 28-year-old concluded the campaign with just one goal in 23 appearances across all competitions. As a result, Orlando Pirates decided not to activate the two-year extension clause in his contract, allowing him to leave for free.

Despite attracting attention from clubs both locally and across the continent, Mbule chose an unconventional route to rejuvenate his career.

Speaking to FARPost, Makaab explained that Zakho SC’s determination and clear plan were decisive factors in securing the midfielder’s signature.
“We had an enormous amount of interest in Sipho Mbule outside of South Africa, particularly in North Africa,” Makaab stated as per FARPost.

“But it was Zakho who made their intentions clear from the start. They viewed Sipho as a marquee signing who could add immense value to their squad.”
Makaab added that the transfer was finalised swiftly once the official offer was made.
“The first discussions took place about three to four weeks ago,” he said. “They submitted a written offer last week, and after carefully considering all the options on the table, Sipho elected to accept this particular deal.”
