Miguel Cardoso hints at leaving Mamelodi Sundowns as Pitso Mosimane speculation intensifies

Has Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso confirmed his imminent exit from the club?

That is the question among observers following his latest social media activity as reports continue to link former coach Pitso Mosimane to his job.

Cardoso’s position has come under scrutiny over the last fortnight when it was reported that Sundowns are in talks with Mosimane over the possibility of returning to the club.

Mosimane had a trophy-laden eight-year spell at Chloorkop, when he won five league titles and delivered their only CAF Champions League crown between 2012 and 2020, before he left for stints in Egypt and the Gulf.

However, since leaving Iranian side Esteghlal FC in January 2025, Mosimane has been without a job and was linked to the Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs roles before this month when it was revealed that he could be about to make a return to Sundowns.

Cardoso, who is yet to comment publicly on the speculation, has given some hints that his chapter with Sundowns could be coming to an end.

The Portuguese tactician, who had the title Mamelodi Sundowns head coach on his Instagram profile has now replaced it with: “Official account of Football Manager, Miguel Cardoso.”

Further, Cardoso posted a cryptic post on his Instagram story suggesting he could be on his way out.

What did Portuguese coach post?

“I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring,” Cardoso posted the now famous phrase from English singer-songwriter and actor David Bowie.

It is not certain if Cardoso will be around by the time the PSL season resumes on January 19, when Sundowns host Orbit College, although he has been leading the team in training as they prepare for the second half of the campaign.

Cardoso’s future has been the subject of discussion in the last three months following a less than impressive start to the 2025-26 season by Sundowns, who ended 2025 second on the PSL table with 26 points from 13 matches, two less than leaders Orlando Pirates, who have a game in hand.
