Mofokeng tipped to fit in Spain by former Chiefs star – ‘Barca will suit him’

Since the 2023/24 season, Orlando Pirates youngster Relebohile Mofokeng has been attracting interest from Europe.

He even tried with the Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, but the move did not materialise. The now 20-year-old came back to Mzansi to help them win the MTN8, Nedbank Cup as well as secure their Caf Champions League space after finishing second in the Premier Soccer League.

Mofokeng is currently a Bafana Bafana international and has been tipped to hit even greater heights soon.

Recently, the young attacker has been linked with a move to LaLiga heavyweights Barcelona. Well, the reports have not been confirmed by either the club or the player's representatives. However, former Kaizer Chiefs attacker Junior Khanye believes the Buccaneer will not find it hard to settle.

“That [Barcelona move] would be a big one. As far as I know, it has never happened before that Barcelona would be interested in our players,” Khanye told SNL24.

“Those people are smart, and they do things properly when it comes to development. They have a good eye for young talent. Even when it comes to international football, Spanish football is always exciting, and I think their game can suit the boy.

“In terms of technique and tactical approach, the boy’s style would suit the way Spanish football is all about. I wish that kind of a move could happen for him.”

Khanye is hopeful the deal can go through, but he insists all those involved in developing the player should be given full credit.

“If he can move there, the boy would be a reference to say anything is possible in football and other players in South Africa would get inspired,” he continued.

“Credit to the School of Excellence for nurturing the boy’s talent under the likes of the late coach James Mabena and all the coaches he worked with. Credit also to Pirates for identifying such a talent and giving him a chance, and well done to [Joseph] Duku-Duku Makhanya for what he contributed during the short space of time he worked with the boy.

“Credit also to Jose Riveiro for the courage to play the boy in such a high-pressure situation that it is at a club like Pirates. I might have had my doubts about the coach initially, but he has proven that he knows what he is doing.

“This boy is a Bafana Bafana player, and he deserves to start and finish games for the senior national team,” Khanye concluded.
