Orlando Pirates winger Tshepang Moremi has identified one major strength that his team has over Mamelodi Sundowns in the PSL title race.
Pirates ended 2025 at the top of the table with 28 points from 12 games, two more than Sundowns, and still with a game in hand over the Brazilians.
The way they steamrolled past their opponents in the first half of the season and also claimed two trophies, the MTN8 and Carling Knockout, has many feeling this could be the year when Sundowns’ stranglehold of the title ends.

Sundowns have won the last eight PSL crowns in a row but they do not look like their former selves after dropping 13 points from their opening 13 games with their displays also not inspiring confidence as they are not imposing themselves on opponents and winning in moments or down to individual brilliance.
Moremi backs Pirates to go all the way
Moremi says his team are motivated to go for the big trophy after what has been an impressive season so far and feels they have enough quality to do it.
“We are going to push to remain at the top of the log table as long as we can. We want to win the league, and for some of us, it will be the first time winning the league, and we want that feeling of winning it,” Moremi said on PrimeSportwithMahlatse.
“Having won the Carling Knockout and the MTN8 was one of the best feelings. And also knowing that I helped the team by scoring. For me, that feeling is something else, and we must be proud because it doesn’t happen every day, and not everyone gets that chance to enjoy this.”
“About the league, we are going to fight very hard to make sure we win it, even though it won’t be easy, but we are going to put in a massive effort to ensure we win it. But I trust my team that we can do it,” the Bafana Bafana winger further said.

What will disadvantage Sundowns in title race?
Moremi then went into details over one main advantage that the Buccaneers have over the Brazilians, saying the fact that they are out of the Champions League could tilt the title in their favour.
“Yes, that’s true because Sundowns have a lot to deal with, and the travelling that comes with the Champions League will not make things easy for them,” said Moremi.

“And for us, we are no longer in the Champions League, and we don’t have to travel outside the country.”
Sundowns have their eyes on both PSL and Champions League titles although there is a feeling that the continental title matters more to the bosses at Chloorkop, especially after reaching the final and losing last season.
It is not certain if Miguel Cardoso will be the man leading Sundowns until the end of the season following recent speculation linking legendary coach Pitso Mosimane to the job.
