Njabulo Blom: Former Kaizer Chiefs star lands surprise club in Asia

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Njabulo Blom has made a surprise move after signing with Vietnamese V.League 1 champions Thep Xanh Nam Dinh F.C.

The transfer comes two months after Njabulo completed a season-long loan deal at his boyhood club Chiefs last season from MLS side St Louis City FC in 2024-25.

The midfielder is set to begin a new chapter in his career in the Asian country and has joined the club alongside Kyle Hudlin, who was recognised as the tallest professional footballer in the world in 2024, standing at 2.01 meters tall.

Blom made 19 appearances across all competitions for Chiefs last season but did not impress coach Nasreddine Nabi with Amakhosi opting against signing him back permanently.

Blom has had a difficult last two seasons

He returned to St Louis City but the club had already made him surplus to requirements and sought a way to cut ties with him to open up a foreign slot on their squad to allow them sign other players of their preference.

Blom signed for St Louis in December 2022 ahead of the 2023 MLS season and started well, playing 26 league games and scoring one goal while adding an assist.

He saw his minutes reduced in 2024 with 16 matches and things became more difficult when South African coach Brandley Carnell was sacked after which the player fell out with his successor.

He went out on loan to Chiefs for one season with a view to helping him find his form under familiar surroundings but did not cover himself in glory and Amakhosi opted against making the move permanent.
