North African club in Talks with Toronto for Mailula Loan

In a move that signals his importance to coach Rulani Mokwena, South African forward Cassius Mailula is the subject of a season-long loan bid from Algerian club MC Alger.

According to iDiski Times, the Algerian giants have approached FC Toronto, hoping to secure the 24-year-old’s services for the upcoming season, which kicks off in just a fortnight.

Mailula's career trajectory is closely linked to Mokwena, who was instrumental in his development at Mamelodi Sundowns

It was under Mokwena's tutelage that Mailula transitioned from the DStv Diski Challenge to the senior team, where he had an exceptional breakout season.

His impressive haul of 15 goals and four assists in 31 games caught the attention of Major League Soccer side Toronto FC, who signed him on a permanent deal.

LACK OF GAME TIME AT TORONTO FORCES MAILULA TO SEEK CLUB ELSEWHERE

However, his time in North America proved to be a difficult one, as the club’s instability and coaching changes prevented him from securing a regular starting position.

This led to a loan spell at Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club for the 2024/25 season, a move that also saw him reunite with Mokwena. It was in Morocco that Mailula regained his confidence, contributing six goals and seven assists in 36 games.

He also left his mark on the global stage, scoring for Wydad at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

With his loan at Wydad now over, Mailula is back at Toronto, but a potential move to MC Alger for the new season could provide him with the stability and coaching he needs to continue his career resurgence.
