Soweto Derby: ‘Orlando Pirates deserve PSL crown unfortunately Kaizer Chiefs will win’

On Sunday, football-loving fans in South Africa will be focusing on the Soweto Derby between traditional rivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium.

Apart from the bragging rights, Pirates want a win to sustain their push for the Premier Soccer League crown while the Glamour Boys are chasing victory to secure top three positions to qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup for the 2026/27 campaign.

Ex-Amakhosi midfielder Frank Makua has explained why Bucs deserve to win PSL crown, but tipped his former team to collect maximum points this weekend.

Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs: Time to stop Sundowns?

“I think let’s cut this Sundowns domination. It’s too long now, hey. I have nothing against Sundowns, but I think Pirates deserve it (league title) this season, with the squad they are having, I think they deserve it,” Makua told Soccer Laduma.

“Unfortunately, on Sunday, Chiefs are going to win, that’s the unfortunate part. But to be honest, they (Pirates) deserve it, they played very well and consistently, some of the games you could tell they are starting to gel.

“They started sluggish, but they are playing very well now; they understand each other, the philosophy of the coach (Abdeslam Ouadddou). When they started, people were questioning the coach, but now you can tell there’s a lot of confidence between the players (and the coach),” he continued.

Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs: Why Amakhosi stand a better chance

In the first round, the Buccaneers claimed a huge 3-0 win, which was their sixth consecutive PSL victory against their rivals in the PSL. Makua has now explained why the forthcoming fixture might favour Amakhosi.

“I think on Sunday they’re going to perform compared to the first-round derby, because you can tell now the spirit is high, the understanding between the players is there. Hopefully, they will do their best on Sunday and do the supporters very proud,” he explained.

“It’s all about them (supporters), it’s not only about the players, but it’s about the supporters first, their families as well, they will be there watching the game, you know, in the derby everything stands still, so they have to perform on Sunday.”
