Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi was forced to eat humble pie after a 5-0 defeat against Orlando Pirates at the Orlando Amstel Arena.

It was a massive victory for the Soweto giants who, prior to the Tuesday Premier Soccer League outing, had beaten TS Galaxy 6-0. As a result, the Sea Robbers are on 54 points, two less than teh defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns who laboured to a 1-0 win over Durban City.

Initially, coach Manqoba Mngqithi had given the Buccaneers no chance of beating Masandawana to the top-tier crown. The Brazilians are hoping to win the title for the ninth time in a row despite the spirited performance from from Pirates.

However, following the huge loss, the Abafana Bes’thende tactician has now changed the tune, insisting the race for the title will most likely go to the wire.

“I don’t know if the title will be decided on the last day. So, I can’t talk about that,” Mngqithi stated following the defeat.

“But what I can say, I like the competition. And I’ve said this even before; I like the competition that Pirates has brought into the championship.

“And so far, so good, but we still have so many games. But it’s just interesting to note that this season, normally when we come to this stage of the season there is one team that is already leading with 12/13 points, that’s why we are even starting to think that it will be decided in the last match when we still have seven games to be played.

“No. So, the reality is, there are still 21 points out there and there is a lot that can still happen, but it excites everyone in South Africa who follows football to see this pressure that is imposed by Pirates on Sundowns and I’m so keen to see what’s going to happen,” Mngqithi concluded.
