Orlando Pirates news in the last 24 hours, including ex-Kaizer Chiefs star tipping Relebohile Mofokeng to play in English Premier League, Tshegofatso Mabasa on player who is ‘something else’ and more.

Mofokeng tipped to play in the Premier League

Junior Khanye believes that Royale Union SG attacker Relebohile Mofokeng is destined for bigger things and his move to Belgium is a good stepping stone to the Premier League in England.

Mofokeng, 21, signed a four-year deal with the Belgian Pro League side with an option to renew for another year following an impressive stint at Orlando Pirates.

Khanye says with the player’s undeniable talent and discipline coupled with the fact that Union’s owner Tony Bloom has a majority share at Brighton & Hove Albion, it is a set up for the youngster to soar and make it to the best league in the world.

“Yeah, it’s a stepping stone, and I always say our league has improved a bit because of Orlando Pirates and [Mamelodi] Sundowns but I won’t say the league has really improved. Let’s be honest these two teams are competitive. And I’m happy the boy is going to the Belgian league, and I think something.

“I think with this deal the boy will go to Brighton, that’s just me. I mean you can’t ignore his talent and he’s so dedicated and disciplined. He’s also proven himself at the World Cup with the minutes he was given.

“He’s going to mature quickly in Belgium you saw how he was improving with each game at the World Cup. I see him playing in the Premier League, he will play for Brighton. I also heard the Director of the club also owns Brighton and this is good for South African football and Pirates. I mean they have built a relationship with his new club, and it will get even better when he goes to Brighton.

“Rele is a gem and he will become the face and with the talent he has I have full confidence he will not fail. Talented players are easy to coach. I see him playing in the Premier League in the next two, three years, this just a stepping stone.”

Mabasa reveals player who was ‘something else’ at Bucs

Former Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has revealed the best player he has played with during his career at the Buccaneers.

Mabasa is one of the players who were released by Pirates at the end of the 2025/26 season, after his contract was not renewed, following a loan spell at Stellenbosch.

In an interview with Apex Sports International, Mabasa was asked which player shocked him by how good they are at training, during his spell at Pirates and he did not hesitate with his response.

“I think you would know who the answer is, I would say Rele. Look, Relebohile (Mofokeng) is something else, we used to say this when he started to be brought into the team, that ‘This boy, where does he take this big confidence?'” Mabasa responded.

“He has always been like that, what you see now, he has always been like that, since he arrived. You see some skinny boy but the confidence that comes out of that, let him have the ball and you will see.

“He is a generational talent. I don’t think anytime soon we will see someone like that, maybe (Emile) Witbooi might be the closest one but ja Rele is just something else and he’s very mature in his game, the way he thinks during games. The boy is something else honestly,” Mabasa added.
