Orlando Pirates tie key forward to new deal to fend off interest from Europe

Orlando Pirates have reportedly agreed a new contract with one of their main strikers as he comes to the end of his deal at the club.

The Buccaneers are reported to have handed Evidence Makgopa fresh terms to tie him to the club after an impressive stint with 10 goals scored in 36 matches so far this season.

Makgopa was entering the final weeks of his deal with the Sea Robbers, having joined three years ago from Baroka, but according to SABC, he has reached an agreement with the club to extend his stay.

The striker has been sharing the goalscoring responsibilities with Tshegofatso Mabasa and after playing second fiddle to the former in the first half of the season, he has been preferred up front by outgoing coach Jose Riveiro in recent matches.

Who else was interested in Makgopa?

Part of his 10 goals have come in back-to-back Soweto derbies, scoring the equaliser in a 2-1 league win against Kaizer Chiefs before again levelling matters as the Buccaneers lost 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup final to their bitter rivals last Saturday.

Pirates fans can now look forward to watching Makgopa destroy defences beyond this season and the 24-year-old will also hope for regular playing time under the new coach that the club will appoint following Riveiro’s departure.

Reports of a new contract for Makgopa come hours after Soccer Laduma reported that the striker has attracted interest from Europe with clubs in Turkey, Belgium, Poland and Norway on his radar.

The new deal will therefore fend off the interest although it is believed that he still retains a desire to play abroad in the near future.
