Percy Tau: Qatar SC make decision on Bafana Bafana forward’s future

Published on by

Bafana Bafana forward Percy Tau is a free agent following his release from Qatar SC on Thursday.

Tau was officially let go by the Qatari club following a brief six-month stay with the club opting against exercising their two-year contract extension.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns winger joined Qatar SC in January 2025 after four-and-a-half years at Egyptian giant Al Ahly and is believed to have signed a big-money contract, having been handed a six-month deal, which had an option to extend for a further two years, but only if he did well.

However, four assists in nine matches, was deemed not good enough for an extended stay on his big-money contract and even though the club survived relegation, they have decided to cut ties with him.

Which clubs could come in for Percy Tau?

Tau was reportedly on a deal worth R16.8 million per month at Qatar SC and will now look for other options with clubs in the Gulf and North Africa likely to be among those looking at him.

The Lion of Judah will not command a fee which is an attractive option for interested clubs with teams in South Africa also likely to be in the market for him.

His departure could see Egyptian side Zamalek reignite their interest after they were reported to have been closely monitoring his situation two months ago while back home, Kaizer Chiefs was the club heavily linked before he headed to Qatar.

Tau was recently spotted at Orlando Stadium watching Orlando Pirates’ final match of the season against Chippa United which raised interest over whether he was making himself available to Pirates or any other team.

Whichever club he plays for can expect goals and assists from the 31-year-old left-footed forward who likes to play on the right wing.

Tau was not called up by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos for the upcoming friendly matches against Tanzania and Mozambique which gives him enough time to sort out his future.
