Pirates close to beating Chiefs and Sundowns to experienced PSL defender

Orlando Pirates have reportedly made a formal approach to Polokwane City in an effort to secure the signature of Bafana Bafana international Thabang Matuludi.

Sources indicate that the Soweto giants have tabled a concrete offer for the highly-rated defender, with a deal potentially being concluded before the current season ends. The 27-year-old has also attracted significant interest from rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Sundowns previously attempted to sign Matuludi during the last transfer window, but their offer was rejected by Polokwane City.

However, it now appears that Pirates are closing in on an agreement with Rise and Shine that would see the player move to the Soweto giants.

“Negotiations are now at an advanced stage. Matuludi is expected to be a Pirates player next season,” a source told KickOff.

Matuludi, one of the most sought after right-backs in the PSL, has been impressive for Polokwane City again this season, making 25 appearances for the club in 2025-26 while scoring two goals.

He is among those in line to receive Bafana Bafana call-ups for the World Cup and can further enhance his reputation with a good performance at the tournament.

Pirates’ current options at right-back are Thabiso Lebitso and Deano Van Rooyen with the former used more by coach Abdeslam Ouaddou this season.

In addition to their pursuit of Matuludi, Pirates are also understood to be nearing a deal for Golden Arrows midfielder Siyanda Ndlovu.
