Pirates Keeper On What Historic Cup Win Signals To Rivals

Published on by

In the wake of their commanding 3-0 MTN8 final victory, Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine has articulated the deeper significance of the win, declaring it a powerful statement from a team that is still in its formative stages.

The Buccaneers secured their first silverware of the season by overcoming Stellenbosch FC, a victory that also handed new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou his first trophy at the helm.

The context surrounding this triumph makes it all the more impressive. Ouaddou’s tenure began under a cloud of scrutiny. After a perfect start to the cup with a 2-0 win over Polokwane City, the team’s league campaign faltered immediately with defeats to Sekhukhune United and Marumo Gallants.

This inconsistent form led to early pressure on the new coach, with supporters questioning if the team could continue the success achieved under his predecessor.

The MTN8 final was, therefore, more than just a chance for a trophy; it was an opportunity to steady the ship and prove the project was on the right track.

The team responded emphatically. After a tense and goalless 90 minutes, Pirates unleashed their quality in extra time to seal the win and a historic fourth consecutive title in the competition.

According to Chaine, this performance sends a clear message about the squad’s potential and resilience. He feels their ability to triumph amidst early-season challenges proves the character and quality of the new-look squad, even while they are still gelling.

‘IT TELLS A LOT ABOUT WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO’

“This is a new team that we have assembled this season, starting from scratch with a lot of new players,” said Chaine.

“I’m happy that we can come together very early in a competition that we have won a couple of times.

“And to do it again is such a short period of time, it tells a lot about what we’re going to do as a group as a new team if I may say.”
