Pirates legend describes how Chiefs can get the best out of Chislett after bright debut

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Ethan Chislett earned high praise when he made his long-awaited debut for the club and already, the Glamour Boys are being advised how best to utilise his talents.

The Durban-born attacking midfielder ended a seven-month wait when he made his first appearance for Chiefs during the Soweto giants’ 2-1 home loss to Stellenbosch FC in the PSL on Tuesday night.

It was a positive start for Chislett as he had some deft touches in midfield, linked up well with the forwards and had a great shot that drew a good save from Stellies goalkeeper Sage Stephens.

In the 70 minutes that he was on the pitch, the former Port Vale midfielder played in the No.10 role and he did not look like a player who was playing a first competitive game in seven months given his assured display.

Vilakazi on which position suits Chislett

Former Orlando Pirates forward Benedict Vilakazi was among those who were impressed by the 27-year-old’s output and has advised Chiefs where he thinks the midfielder can thrive.

“I like Chislett,” Vilakazi on iDiski TV. “I like him because he’s got good touches and he just needs good support.”

“I think he can be a good number 8 for Kaizer Chiefs. Not a number 8 that will be more in defensive but a number 8 that can create chances and get to that final third because he also took a shot and made Sage [Stephens] to work,” added the Pirates legend.

The Pirates record scorer feels Chislett can act as Chiefs’ deep-lying playmaker which would afford him freedom to roam forward, while allowing other players like Mduduzi Shabalala, Mfundo Vilakazi and Gaston Sirino to play in the No.10 role.

However, whether coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze, who prefer to play with two defensive midfielders, can go that route remains to be seen.

Chislett, who has played in the lower leagues in England all his career, joined Chiefs before the start of this season after the expiry of his contract at Port Vale, where he spent two years, scoring 15 goals and providing eight assists in 82 games.

He has previously played for Aldershot Town, Metropolitan Police as well as AFC Wimbledon and had scored 40 career goals and added 16 assists in 242 games, before joining Chiefs.
