Orlando Pirates make surprise Deano van Rooyen transfer decision

Orlando Pirates have officially confirmed the departure of defender Deano van Rooyen, with both parties agreeing to a mutual termination of his contract.

Van Rooyen, 29, joined the Buccaneers from Stellenbosch FC in August 2024, having established himself as a standout performer with the Cape Winelands side. However, his tenure with the Soweto giants was hampered by persistent injuries that significantly limited his playing time.

Increased competition within the squad, particularly following the arrival of players like Kamogelo Sebelebele, also impacted his opportunities. On Friday morning, the club announced that his time at the Sea Robbers had concluded.

Pirates praise defender’s time at the club

“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that Deano van Rooyen will be leaving the club, after the player and the club agreed to part ways by mutual consent,” the team stated in an official release.

The statement continued: “The decision follows open conversations between Deano and the Club, with both sides agreeing that the time is right for him to begin a new chapter in his career. Van Rooyen joined the Buccaneers from Stellenbosch FC ahead of the 2024/25 season, arriving as one of the most consistent full-backs in the Betway Premiership. At the Club, he delivered exactly what was asked of him.”

Van Rooyen to attract significant interest

Pirates also praised his professionalism during his spell, where he made over 50 appearances. “Whether starting or coming off the bench, Deano carried himself as a model professional throughout his time at the club. Orlando Pirates Football Club would like to thank Deano for his contribution and wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Given his proven track record in the Premiership with both Stellenbosch and Pirates, Van Rooyen is expected to attract significant interest from other clubs. He is unlikely to remain a free agent for long as teams look to bolster their defensive lineups ahead of the upcoming season.
