Orlando Pirates provide Soweto Derby injury update

Orlando Pirates assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi has delivered positive news from the team’s medical room, confirming a nearly full-strength squad is available for the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.

The Buccaneers head into the clash in formidable form, boasting an eight-game unbeaten streak in the league, which includes six victories and two draws, as they continue their pursuit of the PSL title.

Their rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, are also enjoying a strong run, having secured five wins and a draw in their last six matches as they aim to solidify their position in the top three.

Speaking at a media event, Ncikazi stated that no new injuries were sustained following their comprehensive 3-0 victory over AmaZulu last weekend. Only two players remain sidelined.

“The standard injuries that we still have – Xoki is still doing rehab, Sihle Nduli is also doing his rehab,” Ncikazi explained. “I haven’t seen anybody [new] in the doctor’s bed. I think we will have a clean bill of health except for the two main injuries that are known.”

Ncikazi acknowledged the magnitude of the fixture, which he dubbed “the biggest game in the continent,” and predicted a closely fought battle given both teams’ recent performances.

“Preparations are going well, preparing for a very big match,” he said. “The beauty of this match is that it’s going to be highly competitive. If you were to take a sample of the last seven matches, it’s five wins for both teams.”

He highlighted the impressive defensive records of both sides, noting, “They have conceded only three goals, we have conceded four. That already indicates how narrow the match will be. It will be a highly competitive match, and we are preparing to win, knowing who we are, the magnitude of the game, and the importance of the points.”

The Soweto Derby is set to kick off at 15:30 on Sunday, April 26 at a sold-out FNB Stadium. Pirates will be looking for a repeat of their 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture earlier this season.
