Former Kaizer Chiefs star Junior Khanye has made a bold comparison, likening Orlando Pirates' midfielder Thalente Mbatha to retired Brazilian international Paulinho.
This high praise comes after Mbatha’s impressive performance for Bafana Bafana in their recent 3-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Lesotho.
Playing the full 90 minutes at Free State Stadium, Mbatha was a key figure in the dominant win. He effectively controlled the midfield, showcasing the kind of all-action, box-to-box qualities that made Paulinho a top-tier player for clubs like FC Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur. This was Mbatha’s sixth international cap since his debut in September 2024.
Khanye’s comments highlight Mbatha’s growing influence for both club and country. The comparison to a player who was a crucial part of Brazil's national team and a La Liga-winning side is a significant vote of confidence. It suggests that Mbatha has the potential to become a vital force in the midfield, a player capable of contributing in both attack and defense.

This kind of recognition from a well-known former player like Khanye underscores the rising profile of the young midfielder. As Mbatha continues to gain experience and confidence, his role in the national team is expected to grow, potentially making him a pivotal player in South Africa's quest for World Cup qualification.
‘HE REMINDS ME OF PAULINHO’
“Can I please complement this boy Thalente Mbatha, that boy has improved,” Khanye said on iDiskiTV.
“That boy looks lively, he avails himself, box-to-box, he masters that position. He reminds me of Paulinho, the Brazilian.
“He was good with box-to-box [midfield role]. That’s why they hit us with 5-0 [in a friendly match].
“The Brazilians play like us, I’m a fan of that type of football. There’s no hitting the ball in the air. They are skilful like us, technically very good and hardly play with tall players.”
