Pirates stunned by CT City in hard-fought battle

Orlando Pirates missed the opportunity to ascend to the top of the Betway Premiership table after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Cape Town City on Wednesday evening.

Buccaneers coach Jose Riveiro made a single change from their CAF Champions League victory, with Thalente Mbatha replacing the suspended Makhehlene Makhaula in midfield.

Muhsin Erturgal, meanwhile, made several changes to the Citizens lineup following their win over Kaizer Chiefs, bringing in Haashim Domingo, Kamohelo Mokotjo, and Jody Ah Shene.

Pirates dominated the early stages, with Mofokeng causing problems down the left flank. Dlamini nearly marked his return with a goal but saw his effort denied by the crossbar.

The Citizens employed a defensive approach, frustrating Pirates and forcing them to attack down the wings.

This pattern continued throughout the first half, with City goalkeeper Chaine making a crucial save to deny Darwin Gonzalez from close range before the break.

The second half began similarly, with City nearly taking the lead when Jody Ah Shene was presented with a clear chance but fired wide of the mark.

Riveiro responded by making a double change on the hour mark, introducing Boitumelo Radiopane and Thabiso Monyane for Tshegofatso Mabasa and Deano van Rooyen.

MASWANGANYI MISSED A PENALTY

Pirates were awarded a penalty on 70 minutes after Nyama fouled Patrick Maswanganyi, but the spot-kick was squandered as Maswanganyi struck the post.

City capitalized on this missed opportunity, with Darwin Gonzalez scoring his second goal in as many games with a deflected effort from the edge of the box.

Despite a late surge from Pirates, City held firm defensively to secure their second consecutive league victory.
