South Africans can look forward to watching Mamelodi Sundows, Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch in the CAF Champions League after SuperSport TV secured rights for the continental competitions.
Football fans had been left in the dark somewhat after SuperSport TV lost the pay tv rights for the inter-club competitions with last season’s matches not available on the channel.
However, this season all CAF inter-club matches will be on SuperSport, who secured the pay tv rights, while SABC have the free-to-air media rights for the Champions League, Confederation Cup, CAF Women’s Champions League 2024 and CAF Super Cup 2025.
What did Patrice Motsepe say over the media rights?
“The exponential growth and global competitiveness of football in Africa has resulted in substantial interest from major African and international broadcasters in African football. SuperSport, SABC and Azam Media have been participating competitively in the CAF media rights bids,” said CAF president Patrice Motsepe.
“CAF welcomes them all as partners, joining a number of CAF’s media rights holders. We are committed to ensuring that CAF’s Competitions including its broadcast products are world class.”
SA has four teams in CAF inter-club competitions
Sundowns and Pirates are South Africa’s representatives in the Champions League, after making it to the group stages, while Stellenbosch sailed through in the Confederation Cup.
Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns’ women are also set to feature in the Women’s Champions League, making it a treat for South African fans.
