The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) has strongly condemned the pre-match incidents that marred the Soweto Derby, saying player safety was severely compromised and calling for immediate action.
In a statement, SAFPU labelled the scenes that unfolded before the clash between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs as “regrettable and unacceptable.” The union expressed deep concern that such events damage the reputation of South African football and expose players to unnecessary risk.
“The South African Football Players Union notes with grave concern the events that unfolded prior to the recent Soweto derby,” the statement declared.

SAFPU emphasised that football should be a symbol of unity, discipline, and national pride. However, it warned that disorder and confrontation at high-profile matches undermine the sport’s integrity and shake public trust in its administrators.
The union has urged authorities to move beyond mere reflection and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. It called for the incident to be treated as a critical turning point for all stakeholders, including clubs, officials, security, and governing bodies.
Highlighting its primary concern, SAFPU stressed that protecting players is a fundamental duty. “The safety of players is not negotiable; it is foundational,” the statement continued, reinforcing the union’s firm stance.

The organisation also pointed to the Soweto derby’s status as one of Africa’s most iconic football fixtures, cautioning that its legacy must not be tarnished by preventable chaos.
In its conclusion, SAFPU reaffirmed its dedication to protecting the rights, safety, and dignity of its members. The union pledged to continue engaging with the relevant authorities to enforce higher safety standards in the future.
This statement is expected to amplify calls for stricter security protocols and greater accountability in the management of major South African football events.
